The yarn you have used in this lovely wee hat looks EXACTLY the same as I am using for the boy's Cabled Hoodie I am knitting at the minute. Is it by 'Hayfield' ? The reports are very good. They say it washes very well...

    Hi Jackie,

Yes, it is Hayfield Bonus DK. Also made these to match.

Made a scarf too, but daughter took it away before I could get a picture.

Made this last year from the same yarn and daughter says that it washes well.

The tension square on the packaging is "30 rows and 24 stitches stocking stitch" with "size 4 needles", what is really confusing me is that the needle size on the packaging is given as "4.0 - 8.0". Oh goodness, I'm feeling really dense here: I had no idea it was going to be so complicated - I just liked the colours of the wool:o

Could the 8 possibly be the UK size? 4mm is UK size 8 - just a thought...

This site for free patterns is pretty good http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php
but to be honest the best site to join up to is http://www.ravelry.com/ its simply brilliant! Huge time eater though :)
  • I could cry.

I have just knitted a jumper in aran wool. The pattern told me to press the garment which I did using my steam iron (which I use for everything). To my horror my moss stitch all flattened and stretched. I had do the whole garment to make it look the same but now it is spoilt.

Has anyone got an ideas on how I could improve the situation.

Ooh, its such a shame when that happens! If you've used majority acrylic it may be quite difficult to resolve as steam blocking with acrylic can 'set' it in shape. If the yarn has a more natural content you should be able to wash the knitted fabric and it should regain its original shape. Hope this helps :)
  • Been working on my cabling, got a beautiful pair of needles in the JL sale which were perfect for this chunky alpaca blend. I still can't do any in the round knitting so this is crocheted together at the back

Just ignore the wonky stitch there *ahem*
