The snow is certainly keeping me indoors, so I have been able to make a great start on my mamouth knitting challenge for my newly 'inherited' 5 grandchildren.:lovethoug.
I've completed the triple cabled front of the hooded jumper I'm attempting, and now well up the back.
Hope you don't mind my running commentry on my progress, it will help keep me focused.

  • Help - whilst I can knit I am a complete numpty where yarn thicknesses and stuff are concerned.

I've just bought some of the lidl Panda knitting yarn, see here, but it doesn't say what thickness it is (double knitting or whatever) how can I tell? Or has someone wise than me bought some and can put me out of my misery.

Thanks very much - she said, lowering her head back beneath the parapet!

Does it have a needle size on the ball band? Double knitting usually uses 3.25mm (No.10) and 4mm (No.8) knitting needles. The smaller is usually for rib edgings on garments and the bigger for the main body of a garment.
The only other way is to test it against a DK pattern by doing a tension square and seeing if it matches the DK.
There was supposed to be a cardi pattern with the yarn I think? You could check tension against that perhaps?

Oh help! Closer examination of the pattern shows that most of the knitting should be done with "needle size 4" I wonder if that is metric, UK or US?! I guess I'll find a DK pattern and try doing a tension square and see where I get to - that'll teach me!

    Thanks.

It shows the needle size on the link you posted and the tension square size next to it.

A tension square size for DK on 4mm needles is 22/24 stitches to 26/28 rows in stocking stitch.

  • The tension square on the packaging is "30 rows and 24 stitches stocking stitch" with "size 4 needles", what is really confusing me is that the needle size on the packaging is given as "4.0 - 8.0". Oh goodness, I'm feeling really dense here: I had no idea it was going to be so complicated - I just liked the colours of the wool:o
