If it helps the square size from issue one is:

DK wool - knitted on 3.5 mm needles - Garter stitch.
    20cm by 20cm square
    44 stitches by 66 rows
    25g ball of wool

So just knit your square in 20cm squares and you'll be fine.
You can choose your own colours scheme and have a repeat square to bring it all together.

To add to this :- the square size is important and some squares will have more /less stitches and rows to achieve the correct square size.

For added help look at some knitted Sampler Afghans.

    I could cry.

I have just knitted a jumper in aran wool. The pattern told me to press the garment which I did using my steam iron (which I use for everything). To my horror my moss stitch all flattened and stretched. I had do the whole garment to make it look the same but now it is spoilt.

Has anyone got an ideas on how I could improve the situation.

    Which yarn have you used?
Was it the recommended yarn on the pattern?

I can only imagine how you must feel

I've now knitted another beanie hat :)
I thought ooh I'll use bigger needles so it will knit up quicker, but patterns are there for reason but my daughter loves it as apparently it's a trendy slouch hat,
So all's not lost lol x

I'm keen to make a scarf or fingerless gloves or ear warmer thing all her friends wearing,
I found the wool in attic so 2 days peace for family free

I could cry for you! I'm afraid I've got nothing much useful to add other than condolences
