The Knitters Thread

If you buy a ball of sock wool from some places they give you a free basic sock pattern, I had one from Get knitted at one point.
One bit of advice that worked for me was don't get too hung up about reading ahead in the pattern. When you first read it, it doesn't seems to make sense, but if you just do it as you go along it all clicks into place.
I think it's because you are making a 3D object so it's difficult to imagine it from the instructions but when you make it is all flows like magic
I heard or read something once that said that a knitter who was asked what they were making and said socks, found that people were very off hand about it- "why do you want to make socks?" (they have obviously never worn hand knit socks)
So instaed they started to say "I'm doing three dimensional textile sculpture" apparently much more acceptable!:rotfl:0 -
Love the socks Orkney...I've bee usig my sock ball ends to make fingerless gloves and some more hexapuffs...eeding a bigger bag to store them now...need to make about 300 to make a decent "quilt".

On the subject of socks, can I ask a question?
I use Silvers Sock Class, which tells you to cast on loosely over 2 needles. Feedback about the socks I made for gifts is that they have gone slack around the top. Advice please?
Never tried needle felting but would love to do a class or workshop to see if it's worth buying the tools.
I have never made socks, what is the easiest pattern to start with, keeping in mind that I am not a natural knitter :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Getting to the website seems to be a bit difficult today, but could be the t'internet as a whole rather than the site itself...it's windy out! :rotfl:
I printed off the all the directions...beware, quite a few pages, but with piccies too, so very useful. I put them into plastic pockets and then into a folder. I referred to it constantly the first few pairs I knitted, now I only go back to it when I have a brainstorm!!
At the moment I am knitting from a pattern from this book, still using the basic techiques I learned from Silver, so a very good grounding.
By the way, I find knitting with sock wool, gives sooo much the best result, can be expensive though! Trawl the internet for best deals. Have a look @ Blacksheep; Kemps or here for better deals on sock wool..no, I am NOT buying any more...at least not until Monday!!!! :rotfl:
Looks like that Rico World College wool is thicker than 4 ply, so you need the full 150g ball to make a pair. Normally a 100g ball of 4ply sock wool will make a pair of socks...even for my son who's a size 12!!!
Good luck with your sock knitting!!
Toddles of to see if I can remember how to do an invisible cast-on again (managed it for the first sock!!) ...where's my book...this is not in Silver's class!
Have a knitty weekend everyone x

Thanks Keiss - I'll try that in future.
Funny you should mention hexipuffs as I was looking at that just the other day.
Would love to give it a go but not sure about the technique and its a paid pattern.

Keiss Thank you so much for that site and advice, I might pick up some of the sock yarn from Lidl on Monday and give it a goTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Hi does anyone know when the wool will be on sale at Lidl please as I usually miss the offers. Thanks. I felt pleased with myself today as I knitted a cowl on circular needles today (first time I have used them as I have only just mastered casting on and the knit stitch) When I modelled it for the OH he said it looked like a ruffle thing a king used to wear! Back to boring scarves for me then.0

Have you thought of using knit-in elastic?

(probably available from other sellers as well)
I've not actually got round to using it to knit with, but I have used it successfully, woven in afterwards, to solve the slipping down problem.0 -
Hello hoping you all have some suggestions for me! I had my son 10 days ago and he weighs just 5lbs so is teeny! being a knitter of course I had prepared lovely cardis, some knitted trousers, hats etc for him...which are all WAYY too big for him! he will probably grow into them by summer lol
Anyway I want to knit something for him that he will actually be able to wear without looking like hes drowning in it but I cant decide what! I dont want it to take too long as hopefully he'll be growing fairly quickly so I was thinking of maybe a few smaller things - any ideas?? Hes in tiny baby size clothes at the moment obviously!
Thanks in advance!!May Grocery Challenge -£216/4000 -
