Hi all. Sorry to just jump in but I'm having a knitting crisis and need help!

I'm making a friend's baby a cardigan but I've never knitted one before. I'm using a Frances Fletcher pattern called one ball baby cardigan. It's knitted in garter stitch sideways and you have to put stitches on stitch holders (an issue in itself as the pattern doesn;t SAY you need stitch holders so I've improvised with some wire).

Anyway, I followed the pattern for the back, so I've knitted 40 rows, done 6 rows of shaping, knitted 39 rows, then six rows of shaping, then 40 rows, then it said to knit 30 stichees, put onto stitchholder, and cast off.

I've done this, and what I've got is a squarish piece of knitting with shaping at the top (I assume). I thinkt he shaping is for the back of the neck. BUT the stitches on the stitch holder are at the BOTTOM of the piece.

Now, I think they are for the sleeves - it says later to pick up stitches, which from my book I understand to be something different but as the pattern never again mentions any stitch holders (you end up with three lots of stitches on holders as it reads), I assume it means those.

But that means that the shaping will be at the bottom of the cardigan back, which seems very odd.

Has anyone knitted this cardigan, and can oyu help, or can anyone help from my description?

And if it is wrong can I either just completely cast it all off and sew the sleeves on, or can I un-cast-off the cast off edge, and change it around somehow?

I'm so cross! I followed the pattern really carefully and used a row counter. Its quite badly written IMo cos I'm not even sure which is the right side aas it doesn;t say, and for the fronts, it writes one out then says for the other to 'reverse the shaping' which I'm not sure how to do!

Beginning to wish I'd never started knitting :( I have no-one to ask for help IRL.

Skintchick, I'm assuming it's this one? I've never made it though it does look deceptively simple compared to the pattern you've described - some things are made unnecessarily complicated.

Why don't you use the contact form and ask them to explain? I hate it when patterns are bad and think designers have a duty to help you out!
Oh dear, here we go again.
  • Hello, I hope nobody minds but I have a knitting related question that I need some help with please?

I've just found out I'm expecting my first baby in September :j

My mum has kindly offered to knit some bits and pieces for me, and I've picked out a few patterns that I like. One of them says it's for DK Sprinkles wool, which I had a look at in the shop but didn't like the colours. I've looked online to see the full range but I'm not overly keen on the way it knits up. I'd quite like something a bit brighter / less pastely as it's for a snowsuit.

I know so little about knitting- I can't even cast on and off for myself and I struggle to knit a straight scarf, so please forgive me if this is a really silly question :o but what would be a suitable alternative wool for a pattern that suggests DK sprinkles?

    Thank you in advance

I've just had a similar experience and there was a mistake in my pattern. I was knitting a placket for buttons at centre front, but the pattern put it at the outside edge as it was badly written. Perhaps your shaping was done on a Right Side row instead of Wrong side or vice versa?

Do you know a knitter who can go through the pattern with you? Or how about the place where you bought the pattern and / or yarn? If it was a shop, I often find that ladies who work thedre can be very helpful.

Not sure if that pattern is on Ravelry, but one of the things I love most about that site is the pattern notes. If there is a problem, it will have been spotted and there will be corrections.

A photo of what your knitting looks like may help us see what has happened.

    Good luck!

    Congratulations on the baby :T

What you need to do is check the gauge of the Sprinkles yarn. This will be on the band of the yarn and will say something like 18 stitches and 22 rows to 10cm / 4"
Once you know that gauge, you can substitute any yarn with the same gauge,

I have looked on Ravelry but can;t see a DK Sprinkles. What make is it?

If you want a wool with a similar feel I think Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake would be OK, although I don't know about the range of colours. Wendy Velvet Touch is also similar and has more colours.
If you don't necessarily want the towelling feel to it, then I guess you could use any sort of DK wool as long as the tension etc was the same.

Thank you so much, I will pop back to the shop and note down the gauge. This link is the sprinkles wool I think it's King Cole, it's pretty but there's not much scope unless you know if you're having a boy or a girl.

ETA just noticed the gauge on the link- don't need to go back to the shop!!

Thanks again, really appreciate your time :)
