Morning all, hope everyone had a great Christmas and that you all got some nice goodies.

I got Sock Innovation and I love it! I can't wait to get going with some of the designs. Think I would like to use plain one-colour sock wool so you can see the pattern better...anyone recommend a make or two? All I seem to have is the stripey/patterned wool...great for plain socks, but a bit busy for fancy
    designs!

In the middle of knitting a plain pair for DS2 (size 12, so lots of knitting!!). Finished one sock in Scotland, half way up the cuff with the second, should get it finished this year, then will start the new year with something from my new book. Looks like I might be knitting my DS1's GF a pair or two..she gets quite cold feet, and would appreciate some fancier patterns. Must measure her feet before she leaves later today, so I can make the right size!

Right. off to hang out another load of washing...nearly caught up after our trip north...6 days away without washing clothes, means lots to do when we get back!! :D

    Happy knitting everyone!

I bought myself that same book just before Christmas.....been coveting it for a while! I have started on Lindsay, and made the first sock already- loved the garter stitch short row heel and toe (my first short row toe). I have used a Trekking green yarn, semi-tonal but solid from a distance. Pics on ravelry, called Green Lindsay. Trekking are good for yarns like that I think. It was my second 'sock only' book, the other was a two at a time toe up book (though of course you can do one at a time if you like lol).
I am doing lots of washing too, blame having a DS and getting wet on our bus trip to Kirkwall (still no car!).

ETA Patons Diploma Gold is also decent enough for socks, comes in lots of plain colours and Regia do make some plainer yarns too.

has anyone got a pattern for a headband for someone 20ish?

If you still need one, I posted one a page or two back, click on my name, click see more posts by skintchick, then you should see it. But you can just cast on 11 or 17 stitches (depends if you want it 2 or 3 inches wide) on 5.5mm needles (I think) and knit till it's long enough then sew ends together with a half twist and you're done. You can use any stitch you fancy.

Can anyone recommend a good tutorial or their own instructions on how to knit? I was trying for hours all last week. I have the nicest casting on you've ever seen, but I can't actually knit! I can only transfer the whole thing to the other needle with no new stitches anywhere to be seen. It's doubly frustrating because I can remember as a little girl just sitting at grandma's knee and knitting dozens of squares like it was nothing at all. I've looked at so many videos and diagrams, and I feel like I understand it and I'm doing it correctly until it comes to looking at the results :(

Try www.learn2knit.co.uk, or the site already suggested www.knittinghelp.com both are great.

I have never been any good at knitting but last night I sat down with Knitted Toy Tales by Laura Long and I made a knitted mouse :D

There are lots of gorgeous patterns in it and it is comfortably rated from beginner to the more advanced. It is also a lovely visual feast of a book and is worth having a relaxing read through!

Anyone seen any good yarn sales online?

Hi, I think you were looking for patterns using Sirdar dune?
So, go to Ravelry and click on 'yarns' along the top. Enter Sirdar dune, or whatever you have, and it will say how many projects there are. Click on that and it will take you to all the things people have knitted.
Click on any one to see the details. On the right of an individual page is a box with 'about this pattern', so then click on the name of the pattern.
It seems long-winded but after a few goes you will be whizzing about:)
    Hth.

Thanks so much, using your help I think I've determined it's not a free pattern so that's why I couldn't see the full pattern on the site! I'll source it elsewhere.

    Thanks again,

    Julia

John Lewis in Glasgow has loads of yarn at 50% off there was a variety of Tweed, Rowan, Debbie Bliss to name but a few. Huge numbers and gorgeous colours. Also a few kits half price including toys and hot water bottle covers. I would imagine other John Lewis stores with haberdashery sections would have a similar sale.

I was very impressed and had to talk myself out of the shop :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
