Re magic loop, I use it for sock knitting, but cannot locate a good pic of it just now. Will find one/take a decent one next time I start with magic loop!

  • When I started magic loop, I just had to keep trying by following videos on you tube and then it just clicked. No idea how to do two things at once though!

    Lovely socks as usual OrkneyStar

Got a lovely book on knitting 'Ultimate Knitting bible' for Christmas which should solve all my problems from now on. Also got some vouchers for my local wool shop, not sure whether to buy some nice wool or put it towards some knit pro needles.

I got Debbie Bliss The Knitter's Year, which has some lovely patterns as well as some slightly 'odd' ones.

  • Can anyone recommend a good tutorial or their own instructions on how to knit? I was trying for hours all last week. I have the nicest casting on you've ever seen, but I can't actually knit! I can only transfer the whole thing to the other needle with no new stitches anywhere to be seen. It's doubly frustrating because I can remember as a little girl just sitting at grandma's knee and knitting dozens of squares like it was nothing at all. I've looked at so many videos and diagrams, and I feel like I understand it and I'm doing it correctly until it comes to looking at the results :(

    I was always taught

IN - insert right needle through loop on left needle from left to right (for a knit stitch)
OVER - take working yarn in right hand and pass it round your right hand needle from left to right
THROUGH - move right hand needle towards you and pick up the loop you have made with the working yarn
OFF - slide your right hand needle along your left hand needle and slip loop off the end

You have now created a new loop on your right hand needle.
Repeat until you have finished a row, then turn your work and start again.

    Good Luck!

If you're managing to slide the stitches from one needle to the other then you're halfway there. Once you've poked the righthand needle through the stitch on the left needle wrap the yarn around the tip of the righthand needle. Hold on tight to the yarn (pulling it towards you), pull the righthand needle backwards and as you pass under the left hand needle pull the righthand needle upwards and push the stitch off the left hand needle.

  • I am really pleased. My OH bought me the Kim Hargreaves Whisper pattern book for Christmas. I have now got my eye on some wool in the sale. This is one of the nicest books I own (and I have a lot).

Just been to the mill for wool - the woman was so helpful, going to the warehouse as they didn't have enough of the one I wanted in display.
