Can anyone recommend a good tutorial or their own instructions on how to knit? I was trying for hours all last week. I have the nicest casting on you've ever seen, but I can't actually knit! I can only transfer the whole thing to the other needle with no new stitches anywhere to be seen. It's doubly frustrating because I can remember as a little girl just sitting at grandma's knee and knitting dozens of squares like it was nothing at all. I've looked at so many videos and diagrams, and I feel like I understand it and I'm doing it correctly until it comes to looking at the results :(

I'd definitely recommend www.knittinghelp.com an online tutorial website. I've learnt so much from them, and they are little videos which you can keep replaying until you get it right.

I got Debbie Bliss The Knitter's Year, which has some lovely patterns as well as some slightly 'odd' ones.

Ooh me too. Know what you mean about a real mixture of patterns. So love a new knitting book though!

ive just bought some ice wool to make a frilly scarf can someone tell me if i knit all rows or knit/purl , the instructions are rubbish , the person in the wool shop said i need just 7 stitches

If its the stretchy yarn that looks a bit like knitting with fishnet tights, then I found the instructions on youtube. Looked up can can knitting yarn and went from there. Its a bit fiddly, but very effective.
  • I thought after my hat/warmer almost disaster I'd start afresh with something even easier, and as I'm still trying to resist putting the heating on I've decided on some really simple fingerless mittens. I'm hoping this will get me into the swing and build my confidence up a little. not sure I've figured out how to post pics yet, but when I've finished I'll give it a go. already finished the ribbed cuff on the first one but now I'm off to bed because the bin lids will have me up early in the morning;)

Never used circular or dpn before - done lots of knitting with staright needles. Can I knit fingerless gloves with the magic loop please? Can I use any pattern?

    Morning all.

Can I ask if anyone has knitted the King Cole Boys Jumper 3145?

    http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/childs-pullover-2

I think I've found a mistake in the pattern.
Doing shaping on right side of neck for front of jumper. It has you casting off at the outside edge of your work instead of the neck edge

Think I'm going to contact King Cole as I wasted hours on this last night :(

One thing that may help you is to hold your right hand needle a bit like a pen, with your thumb tucked underneath. The needle rest on the bit where your thumb joins your hand so that you don't drop it when you form stitches and it can't fall out of the stitch you are forming (have a look at this video on Youtube: http://youtu.be/ejAD3pMQ7b0 ). It is also a little bit faster than the style now taught as "English knitting" but the way you hold your wool and form the stitches is exactly the same. (Although the video is titled "Australian Knitting", I've seen older British knitters use it, including such luminaries as Alice Starmore.)
"Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'

It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

Morning all, hope everyone had a great Christmas and that you all got some nice goodies.

I got Sock Innovation and I love it! I can't wait to get going with some of the designs. Think I would like to use plain one-colour sock wool so you can see the pattern better...anyone recommend a make or two? All I seem to have is the stripey/patterned wool...great for plain socks, but a bit busy for fancy
    designs!

In the middle of knitting a plain pair for DS2 (size 12, so lots of knitting!!). Finished one sock in Scotland, half way up the cuff with the second, should get it finished this year, then will start the new year with something from my new book. Looks like I might be knitting my DS1's GF a pair or two..she gets quite cold feet, and would appreciate some fancier patterns. Must measure her feet before she leaves later today, so I can make the right size!

Right. off to hang out another load of washing...nearly caught up after our trip north...6 days away without washing clothes, means lots to do when we get back!! :D

    Happy knitting everyone!

Keiss - will be very interested to see what you think of that book.

I have only done pretty basic socks so not sure if it may be too difficult for me.

BTW have you read the reviews about how many mistakes there are in the patterns?
Apparently you have to go onto the publishers website for the corrections, which isn't very good :(
