It may be the yarn weight classification system number. This link explains it:

This system is a US thing so not all yarns will have that information on the band.

thanks, that makes sense the wool is from a website called ice yarn which is based in turkey. talking of matching up wools would someone please be kind enough to look up some of these bargain wools i bought and could maybe tell me what kind of wool i could use in substitution so that i may be able to look for matching pattern

Can I suggest you look on ravelry.com (free to join)- you can put your yarn in a search (or just search for ice yarns and find yours), if it is in the database (which most yarns are) you will get an information page, also a link to projects others have done.
This is the link with all the ice yarns (might not work if you are not a member yet).

Just made this for mum's birthday (she said she did want a hat or beret, wasn't sure if she had enough- did cream so it would match anything!), started last night and finished this afternoon. Just cast on another pair of socks for DH, will do in tandem with my socks and some other things!

    Hi Orkney

I'm knitting my mum a scarf at the moment for Christmas and wanted to make a hat to go with it but can't find a pattern I like for the tension of wool I'd be using. I'd love to know what pattern you used to make this.

Sure, this is the link, but you have to join the Bernat site (free) before you can get the pattern. I found it through ravelry, where the link took me to Bernat site, and I had to join up first. This pattern is for bulky yarn and it called 'Beret' by Bernat design studio. I just added the button as I thought it needed something.

  • That's a lovely hat OrkneyStar, very cute.

I've finished my jumper, a few problems with it, some parts are a bit stretched and loose and there were large holes at the armpits with I've bodged up, when I cast off originally it was too tight and so when I put it over my head I stretched it and somehow unravelled it all but it's finished :D
