I find that one of the neatest ways to join garter stitch is to knit one stitch from each side together, continue to do this and cast off in normal way all along the seam.

i am hoping to knit a hat for my mum tonight, i need to start soon or will never finish it in time. but have already spent too long scouring all the usual places we use pattern central etc but so many varieties to open up once you type in hat. she is only 5' 4" petite frame so need to be careful doesnt look like tea cosy over her hat. she also wants in done in the long eyelash yarn which worries me a bit for the finishing item but on the plus side the wool is quite thick, am using it at the moment to make her a cardigan and using a size 7mm. hopefully someone may have a pattern they can share with me using this same/similar sizes so will knit up quick....thanks to anyone that may be able to help
Are there any more knitters around today that maybe able to point me in the right direction please still not found any suitable patterns especially as I don't know how to use circular needles and even if I did I have no ability to get any0 -

Try this pattern by Woolly Wormhead. It's free, knitted sideways on straights AND uses chunky yarn.
Seriously, I think people over-rate the difficulty of knitting with circulars. They are no more difficult than knitting with straight needles."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'

Finished my first pair of "toe-up" socks last night. Remembered to cast off the tops fairly loosely, and they're fine. The gusset and heel came out really neat.
I have a book from the library - "Socks from the Toe Up" by Wendy D. Johnson. The beauty of knitting toe-up is that if you're not confident that there's enough wool for a pair of socks, you can wind it into two equal balls and just keep knitting the first one until you're sure. If in doubt, you can either add in contrasting stripes, or just have ankle socks!Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
Well done on the socks Winchelsea - I've only ever done cuff down.

Dear All, hoping someone can help me. I have made my first garment for the OH's christmas gift, which is a man's tank top. It came out beautifully (as knitting usually makes me swear, I have to say that this item didn't), and then I decided it should have a quick rinse. I washed in cold water in a bowl in the sink, transferred onto a towel, put to shape and let it dry flat, all as per . . .but the ribbing seems to have stretched. I am so upset with myself, and despite looking all over the 'net, don't seem to be able to find any info on how I might fix this. My last resort will be to cut the rib off and reknit it, but I don't really want to. Any info gratefully received, thanks.
