Are welly socks too ambitious for a beginner? I've bought my sis hunter Welles for christmas and while I'm waiting on their arrival (taking ages) thought I'd attempt a pair of the welly sock things. I gather I can do this with 2 needles as it doesn't matter about the seam but is it really difficult to do?

Gosh Orkney, they look awkward to do. They are really nice and unusual.
We had a dump of snow (near JoG) but its not much. Supposed to be getting a lot more by the weekend.

I have done socks on two needles, they weren't that hard, but you will still need to turn the heel section even with two needles. That is likely the hardest part. The other problem, if you are using thicker yarn, is getting a tight enough rib at the top so they stay up, ideally I would knit them all in rib, but then if you use self-patterning yarn it won't show up so well in rib. Did you have a pattern in mind ?

No Orkney, I don't have a pattern yet. The welly socks fold over the top of the wellys to keep them up so keeping them up shouldn't be too hard in this instance (it's kind of like an over sock idea to keep the famous welly chill out).

Oh ok, so you could maybe even not make a full length sock but little top things to fold over ? All the best with it!

Yeah. I'm thinking kind of like a leg warmer, perhaps reducing the stitches so that it's snigger inside to prevent too many creases but still big enough on the bit for outside to fold over the welly

There are some on ravelry, only 3 are free but the rest seem to be paid ones.

No, but I have admired it many times. I think it might be great for a hat or mittens as it feels so soft and warm.

I'm currently knitting a manu with some artesano inca mist, 100% baby alpaca. It's lovely and soft but I can't comment on how warm it is to wear yet because I've not finished the cardigan :o. It's lovely and smooshy though :D
