    Hi knitters :)

I can crochet. I taught myself via the internet so I know I can follow video instructions. I have browsed you tube for videos showing complete novices how to knit but considering how I don't know where it is I actually need to be in order to pick the very basics up nor do I know what the basic stitch is I need to learn, I wondered did any one have any idea what I need to search for in order to learn as (a complete and utter clueless.. but keen!) novice?

I used the videos at this link to learn new techniques:

    http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on

I already knew how to knit the 'traditional' British way so I don't know how a complete beginner will get on but I found them to be good.

You might want to read the information at 'Getting Started' first...

    Thanks :).
They were a bit of a longer slog that socks for me but that is a nice pattern and kept me hooked without getting bored. DH wearing them today, and liking them, so might make him some more at some point!

Yes, I think that yon means yarn over needle so you get an extra stitch but yfwd yarn forward means you take the yarn to the front of your work between the needles so you don't get an extra stitch.

Just tried it......knit a stitch, bring yard forward to the front and then knit 2 stitches together (put the needle through the front of the 2 stitches knitting them together) .......makes a stitch to compensate for the one you have lost when knitting 2 together....so should still have the same amount of stitches.

Just finished a pompom hat for the baby - he may wear it if they have a cold spell like in 2009.

We were stuck in Florida, with no winter clothes, and no sympathy either!

Twiddling thumbs now with nothing to knit.

    Hi,
I'm trying to do a simple scarf pattern which has mock cable and moss stitch but I can't get the number of stitiches to add up.
I have cast on 25 st and done 3 rows of K1 *p1 k1 which is fine.
    Then the next row reads
    K1 (p1 k1) twice more, *M1, (p1 k1) 4 times: rep from * to last 4 st, m1, (p1, k1) twice (28 sts)

I can't get it right as I'm sure it tells you to make more than 3 stitches when it tells you to rep from *
I know I have to do the bit in brackets if you see what I mean- gosh this is so hard to explain!
Please help- my visit to Jangos with the kids will be so much more interesting if you do:rotfl:

I learnt from this book which is brilliant, it starts at the very beginning.

For searching, try looking for 'casting on' and 'garter stitch'.

My local library now has it so you could try yours?

    I'll try! Here goes

    k1,p1 k1 p1,k1 (5 stitches on rh needle)
    M1, p1 k1, p1 k1, p1 k1, p1 k1 (14 sts on rh)
    M1, p1 k1, p1 k1, p1 k1, p1 k1 (23 sts on rh)
    M1, p1 k1, p1 k1 (28 sts on rh)

You can only do the "repeat from*" twice. Off to get more coffee after that!

PS: Orkney those are classy socks!

This is it written out for every stitch and I have put / in between the sections:

    k1 p1 k1 p1 k1 p1 k1 / M1 p1 k1 p1 k1 p1 k1 p1 k1 / M1 p1 k1 p1 k1 p1 k1 / M1 p1 k1 p1 k1 = 28 sts

I think you may have been including the M1 instead of just the (p1 k1) 4 times.

    HTH

ETA: My post and NannyJanny's disagree!

I hope we don't confuse you even more but the first K1 (P1 K1) twice more is 7 stitches, not 5.

I read it as this -

    K1, P1, K1, P1, K1

    M1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1

    M1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1

    M1, P1, K1, P1, K1

which ends up at 28 stitches. You only repeat the repeat bit once if I'm right..
