I think the Rico Pompom blankets I knit would be far too warm for a baby in sunny Florida....but ideal for our cold winters. Even when I'm knitting them they keep me nice and warm :)

    Morning

Just a quick post to say that I'm back.
Knitted a sock at the airport, on the plane and while I was there, and started a second. Not sure when it will get finished though, as Mum has her surgery today, so may be a bit busy.

cuddles Hope everything went well for your Mum.

Hi hope someone can help me -I am knitting a jumper using reverse stocking stitch, come to shape the armholes and can't work out how to get the shaping stitch to look the same on both edges of the front,it doesn't explain in the pattern and I am sure I used to know how to do it but it has been a long time since I knitted a jumper! Scarves are my thing as they are quick to knit and don't take much brain power! Do I knit 2 tog or k1psso ,ending up with them looking a bit messy-please help :-D
    Thanks

This link may help. As you are slanting inwards as you work, you want a left slanting dec at the start of the row, and a right slanting dec at the end of the row.

Just finished these for DH, size 11 (UK)! Very little yarn left. Nice easy masculine pattern though (Gentleman Socks), which I would recommend. More info. on ravelry.

OrkneyStar (or should I say Sock Master) can I ask a stupid question? I was thinking of knitting socks for family presents but so far the only pair I've started (almost finished) are for me. How do you know what size to knit them? I could find out their shoe sizes but wouldn't have a clue how long to knit the foot IYSWIM.

Cuddles Sending you hugs - hope your mum is ok

Sock sizing- well I will be honest and say it is partly trial and error with some patterns! Silvers Sock Class is a good place to start for basic tips on getting started, and as stated unless you have very odd feet mostly you will find a standard size to fit you. Ravelry has lots of patterns with different sizes on them (eg child, female, male, and some even have more sizes within that). For a guide I cast on 80 stitches for DH who has long skinny legs/feet, about 66-76 for mum/62-72 for me (depending on how tight pattern is, eg rib is tight, lace is looser), who are UK 7 and 5 respectively, and of course more stitches if you use a larger needle you will get a looser fit. I tend to use 2.75mm max for socks these days, using sock yarn, and often a 2.5 or 2.25mm. If you are not completely sure about leg width then a rib is a good start as that will stretch accordingly, whereas a lacey pattern is less forgiving.
HTH and sorry if not specific enough....did you have a pattern in mind that we could give tips on ?

Glad to see you are using N-R wool...it knits up soo quickly cf sock wool!! I have knitted a cushion cover with some of mine...though I haven't finished it...just need to check if it is the right size for the cushion I have. Just knitting the front and backing it with some material, not sure what yet. Going to make yet more touries for the rest of the family. DS2 & I have ones, but plan on making more for DH and DS1 and possibly his GF if I have enough left (can you tell I went overboard when I bought some this summer :o!!)

That's a nice pattern! Looks like the brown Trekking, which has some maroon in it. I have two more balls of that, so might make a pair for one of my men....they will have to wait until I have done the two Xmas fairs at the end of November!!

Been away, visiting my lil'sis and taking DS2 to see a diabetes-in-sport specialist in High Wycombe over 80 miles away (hence the overnight sleep @ sis's). Was well worth the trip, both to see sis and family as well as the specialist.

I also managed to knit nearly half a sock for my dad'd xmas...using Rico Superba Mexico, the blue/green one, getting realy nice patterns as I knit it. Will post piccies once I have finished.

Another weekend of sewing/knitting ahead, probably with a bit of gardening thrown in, sounds great!

Yes it is the brown trekking, with shades of brown and maroon in, very man suitable but fine for a nice ladies sock too me thinks. I panicked that I would run out so I bought another (a good few months after first but Quernstone had two batches in, and a couple of balls were the same one as mine!).
The North Ronaldsay wool was a wee treat.....not sure what to do with the rest of it, and whether I might get some brown too ? I did the hat so fast, compared to socks it is very fast, as you say!

Hope it went well with specialist.......:)

Wonder if I might knit any more later (been knitting since 7am with only food/comfort/laundry sorting breaks

I use this as a referral, it seems to agree with the sizes of people that I actually measure. Unless people have particularly thick/thin ankles/calves, I follow the no. of stitches on Silvers Silvers Sock Class, using 2 and 2 rib. Like Orkneystar, I use 2.75 needles with sock wool atm, but I have been making socks for larger feet lately!! If I was knitting for narrower feet, then I too would step down to smaller needles like Orkneystar.

Really need to get of the 'puter...going cross-eyed now!!

Good luck with your knitting PepPop
