Yes it is the brown trekking, with shades of brown and maroon in, very man suitable but fine for a nice ladies sock too me thinks. I panicked that I would run out so I bought another (a good few months after first but Quernstone had two batches in, and a couple of balls were the same one as mine!).
The North Ronaldsay wool was a wee treat.....not sure what to do with the rest of it, and whether I might get some brown too ? I did the hat so fast, compared to socks it is very fast, as you say!

Hope it went well with specialist.......:)

Wonder if I might knit any more later (been knitting since 7am with only food/comfort/laundry sorting breaks
    :rotfl:
I got my original brown Trekking from Quernstone when we were up this summer, so I could have a matching code to yours :D.

Wow, you have been knitting since 7am today  Sounds like heaven!! :rotfl:Hopw are your wrists/hands after such a mammoth session?

The specialist meeting was just a discussion to talk about the best way to manage his diabetes while training and playing rugby at an intensive level. We learned quite a lot of new stuff today, so well worth the 200 mile round trip. We'll be back again once DS2 starts playing rugby regularly again, after recovering from his broken wrist.

As for using up the N-R wool, I manage to get 1.5 patterened touries out of a 135g hank. I have a deep rib, doubled up over itself and some patterns in the body (used Elizabeth Lovick pattern book). We have big heads in this family! :rotfl: The wool is lovely and soft, without being very scratchy...and soo warm!!

    Have a productive weekend everyone.

Thanks for your advice OrkneyStar  I'll have a look at Silver's tutorial.

Keiss21 Thanks for the link - that may be exactly what I'm looking for. There are a lot of rather large footed males in my family but I don't want to go around measuring their feet as it was going to be a surprise

Finished my first pair of socks last night. When my phone's finished charging I'll upload a pic - thanks for the inspiration and help guys :T

Can anyone help please? I have an old pattern here which I want to use to make my new grandaughter a cardigan, but the pattern is really foxing me.

I am getting really confused with the yo, yfwd and yrn!!

    Row1 - S1, yfwd, *k2tog, p1, yon, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
    Row 2 - S1, p2, *k1, p2 rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 3 - S1, *k2tog, yrn, p1, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, yfwd, k1. (At this stage I have added 18 sts to my row - so I'm sure this is wrong)
    Row 4 - Same as row 2.

I'm going to stop for now until I know what I'm doing wrong - I've looked on Youtube but not getting any further to understanding.
    Many thanks, Gillian

I'm no expert but yo (yarn over needle) yfwd (yarn forward) yrn (yarn round needle)
You should have no extra stitches

Row1 - S1, yfwd, *k2tog, p1, yon, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (after purling one keep yarn still to front when you knit 2 together that means even though you have knit 2 together you have made a stitch to compensate)

Row 3 - S1, *k2tog, yrn, p1, rep from * to last 3 sts, k2tog, yfwd, k1. (knit 2 together then wrap your yarn around the needle and purl one and that also makes an extra stitch to compensate for the one you have lost when knitting 2 together - at end of row where it states knit 2 together bring your yarn forward and knit one this also makes a stitch to compensate for the knit 2 together)

Hope I'm making sense at explaining this
  • Yes, I think that yon means yarn over needle so you get an extra stitch but yfwd yarn forward means you take the yarn to the front of your work between the needles so you don't get an extra stitch.

  • Thank you both, I think I have finally worked it out. I was getting the forward bit mixed up I think. Have finally done the 1st 4 rows and got correct number of stitches. Hope to put up a photo when finished.

    Hi knitters :)

I can crochet. I taught myself via the internet so I know I can follow video instructions. I have browsed you tube for videos showing complete novices how to knit but considering how I don't know where it is I actually need to be in order to pick the very basics up nor do I know what the basic stitch is I need to learn, I wondered did any one have any idea what I need to search for in order to learn as (a complete and utter clueless.. but keen!) novice?
