I tend to do my socks on a circular needle more often than not these days :D.

Hi- is this difficult on circulars- I`ve been using Knitpro needles but wonder whether circulars would be ok. Are you doing Magic Loop and how do you manage the decreasing on a circular.....* confused!*

I use one circular and do one at a time, though have done two at a time. I find the decreases no more a problem on circulars, though at gusset time (if you do heel flap socks) it can be a bit tricky and involves moving stitches around a bit , depending on where you start the round for the picking up of stitches (I tend to break the yarn and rejoin so am picking up first side stitches, knitting sole and picking up second side stitches with N1, and then knit top of sock on N2, all decrease occuring on N1). When I do a 3 needle bind off at toe, I use the two circulars along with a third dpn. If you do find any point tricky you can always use the dpn's for that part :). I find the circulars, overall, easier to hold.

    I finished my scarf:

I was trying out a pattern for a cup cosy, just to practice some of the other stitches (as I don't have circular knitting needles yet), but I just seemed to keep messing it up. Or rather, the pattern didn't make sense to me. It tells you to cast on 12 stitches, and knit (in gt st) 8 rows. Which I did, no problem. Then the next row is:

    Row 9 (RS): k1, k2tog, yo, k1, p1, (k1, m1) twice, p1, k1, yo, ssk, k1

But I think that requires more than 12 stitches to start with. Am I missing something here? Or misunderstanding? Or is there a mistake in the pattern? So confused and frustrated that I gave up on that one!

Euronorris, this does use 12 stitches.

    k1

k2tog (3 stitches used so far)

yo - bring the wool to the front of the work even though you are going to knit the next stitch

k1 (4 stitches used so far)
p1 (5 stitches used so far)

(k1, m1) twice - k1 first, then make 1 by picking up the loop inbetween the stitch you have just knitted and the stitch on the left hand needle. Put this loop on the left needle and knit into the back of it. When you have done the bit in brackets twice you will have used 7 stitches so far.

    p1 k1 (9 stitches used so far)

yo - bring the wool to the front of the work again.

ssk - slip one stitch knitwise onto the right needle. Slip another stitch the same way. Put left needle through the front of these stitches left to right and knit them. (11 stitches used so far)

k1 (12 stitches used so far)

Hope I have not confused you further. You can google m1 and ssk and find pictures/videos of the technique.

i wanted to knit this 3123.jpg

and it said the wool was smart cotton (68 per cent cotton/29 per cent rayon 3 per cent nylon) from berroco inc and for first time in 33 years i wanted to buy the correct wool. however looking on berroco i cant find it. can anyone suggest where i may pick it up or alternaively a similar but cheaper one. unfortunately in trying to find a cheaper one myself i ended up adding to my stash yet again at ice yarns their wool is so cheap £2-£3 for a 800 g bag. down side is it comes from turkey by dhl which can add anything from £15 - £20 to order but even with this added its really cheap. i bought this http://www.iceyarns.com/zerda_twist_blue_grey but as you can see although i got loads as didnt realise they were 100g balls they are not cotton but wool and i think for use with 6mm needles. did they even stock what i needed as i didnt see any. any help gratefully received

I'm asking because when knitting a tension square it is usually recommended to make it a few cms bigger than you need so you get a more accurate measurement. You want to measure a 10cm square but you need to knit one that is 14cms.

This link explains what to do -

    http://www.ukhandknitting.com/data/Tension.htm

and YouTube probably has videos showing how to measure/count.

yes i did only do the set out amount number of rows. i will copy and paste the link you supplied, thanks. would you believe first time i do a tension square it doesnt work out. half way through doing another for a double eyelash yarn cardi for mum. still not finished my top and as you can see above already planning next project and adding to stash bad bad girl ;)

I have no idea what the N1 and N2 mean...bit technical for me!:D But I have been using two circular needles for sock making using silver's sock class and find it really easy.

I'm so proud I have to share... this is my first mitten knitted from a pattern on ravelry using a circular needle. I was slightly obsessed with finishng it and didn't go to bed until 3am.. It's just like making socks but with an extra bit for the thumb, which from the pattern I used wasn't that difficult to understand. I now have to do the other hand.:)

On the technical side on ravelry I've seen the phrase 'negative ease' and 'positive ease' what does this mean?

I can see where I went wrong with the yo stitches. I was counting yo as 1 stitch (as I was moving the yarn to the front then knitting it), whereas, I can see from above that it is yo and k1, that is one stitch!

    Thank you so much!

i also bought this as some of my stash but really have no idea what to do with it. i have enough scarves and dodgey looking gloves and dont want it to just get lost in back of cupboard. is anyone knitting anything at the moment that would look lovely knitted up in this wool?
