i have tried being good for a change and doing a tension thing first, dont usually have the patients. it said to do 22sts for 31 rows on 4mm needles and it should measure 10 mm however it measures 12mm so what size needles do i need to use now. also the pattern is for arm warmers but dd2 has thin arms and so was planning to reduce the amount of stitches as last pair someone knitted for her just slid down and i had to thread wool through at various points and knot so sort of tightening it. if i change needles will i still adjust stitches in the same way or will i have to do it differently as its on different size needles. i know i must be crazy writing this at nearly 3am but with back pain i get little sleep so knitting passes the time a bit. thanks and hope everyone else catching a few zzz's

Gorgeous socks, such lovely colours. Always avoided knitting with 4 needles!

As I was away and without a computer I wanted to make that little kiwi bird that Orkney showed. Grabbed some needles as I loaded up and thought that would be great little project to do while killing time. Anyways started to cast on and couldn't understand why it went haywire. Then realised that I needed open ended needles....what a knitwit :o So instead of abandening all hope I decided to do it with 2 needles which worked and didnt work! I've lost my camera lead at the mo but will post a piccy of Trevor. Was going to call him Trevor the Tr*avel lodge bug as that was where he was born, but thought I might get sued :D:D

He does look like a bug that you would see under a microscope!

I tend to do my socks on a circular needle more often than not these days :D.

  • I'm going to knit 6 dolls jackets, for the 6 naked dolls I've been given, I've finished one & just got a sleeve to do on number 2, hopefully I'll have 3 done by the end of today. I made the first one very complicated by not realising til I was few rows in that I didn't have enough of the green wool I was using so I had to make a stripey jacket.

  • Hester - you've just reminded me of something I used to do at school, knitting jumpers for Sindy or Barbie dolls. They were done in darning wool and used 2 darning needles instead of knitting needles... My friends were very appreciative (I wasn't allowed a doll myself - a whole other story!)

Just a quick q if anyone can help. do you think it's possible to knit a "collar" to attach to a coat like http://www.marksandspencer.com/Una-Blend-Cable-Collar-Jacket/dp/B0051CB4T8?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_20&nodeId=527352031&sr=1-20&qid=1318702892 ? Is there a way to give it a slight cone like curve when knitting or would just knitting the right shaped chunk be good enough?

I'm practising cable stitch atm and keep having major brain farts! Every time I have to start a new row with purl I forget how to and have to look it up. I'm practising with a small ball of yucky coloured wool, knitting chunks of cable knit, unwravvelling and repeating!

Some patterns start off with a smaller needle and go up a size half way through. The cardi I knitted with a big collar which was cabled, was the same needles all the way (which curved around). There is a piccy somewhere back in the thread of said cardi. Or on my homepage.
By the way that jacket is gorgeous....I've got the I want's now :D

    Hi Homealone
I thought I would try and answer as nobody else had!
I think as you are knitting too loosely for the pattern you will need to use a smaller needle anyway to make up for the 2mm. This will then make them the original size. Then as you want them smaller for your DD2 arms you should also adjust the number of stitches. I tend to still use UK needles sizes. Is 4mm a No 8?. Maybe just go down to a No 9 or 10. Just my thoughts. I do knit but not an expert on adjusting patterns! :)

Found the camera cable at last so here is a picture of Trevor the Travel Bug. (He was supposed to be a kiwi bird as I was quite taken with Orkneystar's one, but that failed miserably...full story on my h'page :o)
