Apollonia, those dishcloths look fantastic! What kind of wool did your friend use? It says worsted on Ravelry but I am not sure what that is... I would be keen on doing some myself to use up odds and ends of yarn.

Worsted is sort of between a DK and an Aran weight but it depends on what you want to do with the finished cloth. My friend is using ordinary DK because I thought she would NOT want to use her first knitting success to wash up with - this is to admire and maybe put a plate of mince pies on!

I've made floor cloths out of 'Craft cotton' (aka 'Dishcloth cotton'), lots of companies make it - King Cole, Stylecraft, Twilleys and more. Just google and you'll find it. This stuff is practically indestructable and can be put in the machine on a 95 degree wash! I made two of these (link below) about 3 years ago and they are still going strong - very MSE!

For face cloths, place mats etc check the washing instructions of the yarn if it is important, otherwise any yarn that uses the same size needles as the pattern will do. Tension and finished size isn't as vital as it is for garments.

    Hi all :hello:

I can normally be found on the flylady thread but mainly lurk!

This year I have got back into knitting and am attempting to knit my first jumper. The pattern requires the lovely click chunky wool as main and crofter chunky wool as the contrast.

After changing to the contrast I realised that I'd brought crofter dk not chunky! Is this going to ruin the look of the jumper or will it be ok?

    Thanks in advance.

    x

I'm not an expert on this but I think the jumper won't look right as double knit is a fair bit thinner than chunky. Can you return the wool - did you get it from a local shop?

I've been so bad - discovered the wonderful Delamores website and bought a patterns for a short sleeved top for myself along with the wool (-10% offer) and some wool and a pattern for some socks - I had to do it to get the order to £20 for free P&P ;););). Now I've only got to finish Robbie's scarf, do Emily's scarf, Hector's scarf, Mum's hot water bottle cover, finish my cardigan I promised myself I'd get done over the summer and then I can start the top and socks!!!

I never knew knitting is so addictive. :)

    Thanks Mumof2 & wm3010

I have undone it all as it didn't look and feel right, if that makes sense.

I have ordered the crofter chunky wool from another website (the original one didn't stock the crofter chunky). I shall keep hold of the dk and use it for a scarf or wrist warmers.

    Thanks again x

hi everyone and congrats to all that have finished their projects. i still have a few on needles when it suddenly dawned on me just how close xmas was compared to how slow my knitting can be. am disabled and so at home quite a lot so lucky in that i can spend as many hours knitting as my body will let me. but my problem is and i dont know if anyone will remember i came on here several months ago after completing a fun fur waistcoat for my mother in the summer she then decided mid december that she wanted sleeves on it to take away with her for xmas so came on here for some advice. after lots of encouragement and the ability to hide allsorts with that particular wool i achieved a fairly passable waistcoat now cardigan. she was so pleased in fact she decided how she would love another one in red for this christmas. well after lots of recommended sites i finally found the wool wonderful place in turkey where the wool is £3 or £4 a pack but then price comes up as the norm once the postage gets added on. well anyway initially was going to get a head start on it and scoured all my books and all the sites we use on here regularly but couldnt find what i needed so gave up thinking would look again nearer time. well been doing that all week and none of the sites we use have what i need and i thought it was quite a basic pattern so would be easy but its not. what i am looking for is a basic cardigan shape with short sleeves, no buttons that can be needed using eyelash yarn which recommends size 6-7mm needles but on straight needles. does anyone have such a thing that perhaps they could send i would pay postage or send me a link to perhaps a real basic shape pleeeease am desperate now even had son hunt out old books to scan but nothing and am running out of time!!!

    Hi homealone,

I've also realised I'm leaving it rather late for Christmas knitting presents! I don't know whether you've seen a website called Texere Yarns? They appear to have a pattern for a short sleeved bolero/cardigan that might be suitable for you. The pattern I spotted is Wendy Chic 5348.

I hope this may be of use. I'm still at the scarves and throws stage, so can't really help you with anything else!

still cant find short sleeve cardi, but something has just dawned on me. i have been deliberately been ignoring ones that call for a circular needles but it has just dawned on me that if you have a straight back and front (no decreases) that if you then attach a sleeve with a straight edge it would the stick out at an angle as maybe you need the length of a long sleeve to pull the sleeve down. these are just the ramblings of someone who has been sat up all night scoring free patterns am i right maybe?? do i need circular needles if making a short sleeve cardi?

Do you use the Ravelry site? It is free to join. They have lots of free patterns. Bit difficult to imagine exactly what someone else wants, but I did a search for short sleeved cardies, worked flat, size 6-7mm needles and came up with http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#view=captioned_thumbs&query=Short%20sleeve%20cardigan&fit=adult%2Bfemale&pa=worked-flat&sort=best&needles=6.0mm%7C7.0mm

Some have just a couple of buttons, which you could leave off, or use a loop and button or a shawl pin to fasten. Good luck.
