Cheers, I love Knitty - I usually only go for American knitting mags, as their patterns always seem a bit nicer than ours. Pus you get 30+ in each issue lol
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Thats v. high up on my to do list although I was a bit thrown by the square parentheses, normally they'd indicate multiples of the stuff within the bracket but not in this case. Hope you can shed some light on it. I splurged on cable needles in anticipation. Was considering doing it in berry or fuschia for DD1s birthday pressie but the little oik stays up almost as late as I do which would make it a nightmare to keep secret.

Yeah, looking back at it the parentheses don't actually seem to have a function, as the total stitches for the row is the same total if you add up the instructions

I still have a project on the go, but will cast this on later today and see what happens :rotfl:

    Hi all:j

Almost finished my first pair of socks - :j:j:j will see how they look when sewn up before celebrating too much though:rotfl:

Many thanks to all on here who helped with actual advice & suggestions:T

Now a new question - I liked a knitted Aran gilet but didn't like the price - £89:eek: I sent for it as it states hand-made, thought I might be able to figure out how to copy it as it looks quite simple, but am having trouble knowing what to do - although I also have a book on designing your own patterns I'm not sure where to start. It's a sleeveless Aran patterned gilet fastened with 3 buttons, cables down front + back. Does anyone know where I should start or can point me in the right direction please? TIA if you can help:D

EEk. I'd start by sending it back and then perusing Ravelry for something you like that someone else has already made and rectified the mistakes. It sounds a little complicated for a first attempt at designing your own pattern. Perhaps you could use something thats about right and adapt it to whatever you have in mind.

Hi moo2moo - thanks for that suggestion - I should have also said I couldn't see anything like it on Ravelry that I could adapt - they either had the wrong neckline, or had sleeves etc which seemed to be too difficult to adapt IYKWIM.

Maybe I'll have another look on there & see if I can't find something. A bit daunted by the amount of patterns TBH, plus what to look for - gilest, vest, waistcoat etc etc:rotfl:

  • My grandaughter has just asked me to make her a pair of pink leg warmers to wear at her ballet lessons. I know this should be really easy but I'm struggling to find a pattern. I've looked on the Ravelry site and seen some but I don't know the wool quoted so have no idea if it is double knitting or what, other patterns just take me to other links. I'm also stuggling with computer problems just now and everything taking me twice as long. Can anyone please help with perhaps type of wool I should use and number of stitches. My grandaughter doesn't live near me so I can't even knit a few rows and then judge if it would fit. I'm visiting her in two weeks so time is limited. Thanks for any help.

Ex stage manager - used to always have a pair of these on the go. Must have knitted thousands.

With Double knitting wool and using 5mm circular needles (magic loop method) or DPN's.

    Cast on 60 - Work 26 rounds in 2 x 2 rib.

Knit (stocking stitch) until warmers are 22 " long. Cast off tightly ( as tight as you can as this is the bottom edge)

Dancer leg warmers are worn "full length"and down over the heel of pointe shoes to keep muscles warm - so these will look longer than the 1980's wrinkled leg warmers IYSWIM>

If she is wearing these for dancing then I suggest "garters" made of 1" elastic to hold them up around her lower thighs for safety - with her initials embroidered on to identify her own pair.

Not a very exciting knitting project - but dancers always really appreciate these are they are difficult to buy. Ideal for knitting whilst watching telly, cueing shows, holding open auditions or any other situation where you don't really need to pay attention to your hands.
