    Hi all:j

Many thanks for the help with the chart, I think I have it sussed out now although I'm going to have to write it down in longhand until I have the pattern set - it must be the way I process information LOL. The other thing I found hard is that you start the pattern on the very first row after casting on - doing the cables etc. Now since I used the one needle casting on method, I found this tricky & unless I K into back of stitch, it looks soooo untidy. It won't matter as such since there is a knitted edging you add on afterwards, but I wondered if I should have used a different cast on method - I'm used to doing a few rows of rib before starting a pattern IYSWIM? I'd like to get it right since although this is only a cushion, I might attempt the matching throw if I can get this right:eek:

I always write the pattern out into text as they are just too small to see to knit from. It used to be the case that they printed the chart and the text for the pattern, but they now just seem to print only the chart.

A good, all-round cast on method is the thumb method. This will give a firm, but not tight first row with no need to knit into the back. You are still using just one needle (in the right hand). You make a loop with the left thumb, slip the loop onto the needle and then 'knit the loop'. There is a cast on method where you just slip the loop onto the needle and don't knit it, but this method is too loose.

So don't use this one :

Use this one (up to figure 23) :

  • Is anyone going to the knitting and stitching show at ally-pally this year? I go every year and love it! The last few years have seen an increase in the needlewoork/cross stitch stand which is a bit dull for me (cos I don't do it!) but I still love browsing. Although I'm mainly a knitter, I love buying bits and bobs from the bead stalls too.

I'm planning on going, although I'm waiting for The Knitter to do one of their special offers before I buy my ticket. I want to go on the Friday, if work will let me.

I like browsing the smaller vendors and buying stuff you can't usually find at John Lewis or Hobbycraft. My wallet probably has a date with Black Sheep Wools, since I find it very hard to walk passed the stand without buying at least one of their discounted yarns.

Popped into my local haberdashers for an knit and a natter this morning...and was offered a knitting job!! :j

It's using a 1970's pattern (or thereabouts) of a long coat and skirt, and uses Sirdar Sheba and Sirdar Norsgarn. Don't think they are available anymore, but wondering what to use instead. Anyone here have any ideas? I think I will be contacting Sirdar to see if they can help.

Also, any idea how on earth I charge for making this??!! I suppose the best way is to do a test run of some of the pattern, good to see if customer likes the way it's knitting up..and to work out how long it is likely to take!! What hourly rate would be a good one to charge...no idea myself!! :o

    Hope someone can help.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

I'd like to knit some little hats for the Innocent smoothies so I'll start on them next week. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to knitting and I've taught myself a very strange way of doing it too ^-^ Will let you know how I get on.

  • Hello!

First post to this thread so I'm Laura, 38, knitting in Glasgow. I'm working on a SANDS shawl at the moment. I've been knitting for a few years but haven't progressed much beyond blankies - I just love doing big, plain bits of knitting as it's so soothing and I can watch TV or chat while working on them. I'd really like to be able to offer Christmas presents beyond scarves though so must get more adventurous!

    Hello all :j
Can I pick your brains please ? Since being disabled I'm only able to do ''sitting down'' activities so recently taken up knitting again (not done any since early 70's !) Bit of a novice and so far just done scarves, hat and wrist warmers -think everyones having them for christmas !
Recently got a bag of wool, assorted colours and thought I could do a patchwork sweater............lots of multi-coloured squares sewn together in an oblong for front and back and oblong sleeves. I've googled myself silly and can't find any kind of pattern but could probably make it up but need to know how many stitches to cast on to start with.........it's dble knitting wool I've got and size 12 aand 14 needles and I'm a size 12/14.
Can you help me with this please ?

(Sorry if it sounds a daft query but I'd really like to have a go at this)
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !
