Mary, how big do you want your squares to be?
I prefer doing squares diagonally as you get a better shape, so you start with one stitch and make the square as big as you want.
Only thing I would say is that size 12 and 14 needles are very fine (if they are imperial sizes) I would use 4 or 4.5mm which is equivalent to size 7 or 8.

Hello all :j
Can I pick your brains please ? Since being disabled I'm only able to do ''sitting down'' activities so recently taken up knitting again (not done any since early 70's !) Bit of a novice and so far just done scarves, hat and wrist warmers -think everyones having them for christmas !
Recently got a bag of wool, assorted colours and thought I could do a patchwork sweater............lots of multi-coloured squares sewn together in an oblong for front and back and oblong sleeves. I've googled myself silly and can't find any kind of pattern but could probably make it up but need to know how many stitches to cast on to start with.........it's dble knitting wool I've got and size 12 aand 14 needles and I'm a size 12/14.
Can you help me with this please ?
(Sorry if it sounds a daft query but I'd really like to have a go at this)
This looks ideal, it's a 'one-size-fits all' beginners pattern:

but as cuddles said, you need bigger needles for DK yarns. Try your local charity shops, they often keep knitting needles under the counter!
ETA: DK yarn usually knits at 22 stitches and 30 rows to 4" square with 4mm needles so an 8" square would be 44 stitches cast on and 60 rows etc.0 -
Thanks for your help. I did think my needles might be a bit fine and have got another pair but picked them up from charity shop so not a clue what size they are...........just that they're bigger.
cuddles -thanks for the link........very helpful and love what you've done:T
Apollonia -thanks for the link and the info. Gives me something to work on and as far as size goes its just a case of laying them out and measuring the squares when I've done them I suppose.
I've saved links and made notes.........many thanks:)I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

Lots of "how to" sites will come up if you google learn to knit. Some people find videos helpful, some like books, some like being shown by someone else hands on.
Is it possible for you to see if there are any knitting groups near you? Knitters (like gardeners!) are usually very helpful and patient and keen to pass on knowledge, even to absolute beginners.
Your nearest wool shop or library might have details of groups.
Good luck.0
