The owl pattern is by Debbie Birkin, its all very basic stitches using DK wool. Four 50g balls of varying shades of creams and brownswould be more than enough to do one. The eyes are an obscure size. I ended up having to buy a pack of 50. If you do decide to knit it PM me and I'll bung a pair in the post otherwise you'll end up paying £1 per eye plus P&P online.

Was planning to knit a not-really-a-darlek cafetierre cover but the wool hasn't arrived so am going to attempt "sack of mice" by the same designer instead since it uses up all the left over wool from the owl.
Thanks for the offer of the eyes but when I went onto the site i saw the crochet pattern for an owl cushion which doesn't need purchased eyes and I think my planned recipient would prefer.

    Hello all,

I am a bit of a lurker on this thread but I just had to write something and say how fantastic all the things you make are, really gives me some inspiration! I am not very brave yet with my knitting so tend to stick to things I know I can do fairly well which atm seems to be baby blankets and a few soft animals for my two children lol! I am determined to be brave this year though and try some Christmas bits so will be scouring ebay and Amazon for patterns later (loving all the advent bits that have been posted recently).
Does anyone know approximately which month the knitting magazines start to have Christmas patterns in please?
Chocolate always makes me feel better!

sunshine01, I learned sock knitting from Silver's tutorial here, and I know a lot of other people on here have too. It's really straightforward and easy to follow and I can't recommend it highly enough. Scroll down the page and you will find a list of available tutorials.

    A sock update
I have got one sock done, I am really pleased with it. Quite a chunky sock, but very comfortable. I did it in double knit with no 4 needles.

    Well done for unlurking! Welcome.
Jean Greenhowe has got a few Xmas bits on her website to start you off, the snowmen are brilliant. http://www.jeangreenhowe.com/patterns.html

Lots of us are members of Ravelry https://www.ravelry.com/account/login
It's free to join, and has a wonderful pattern database, lots of which are free.

Sunshine01, well done on the sock. Now you've got the mechanics of it there will be no stopping you!

  • Hi everyone, here is a top I knitted in the week (basically just 2 squares sewn together), I'm really pleased how it fits.

    Hello all,

I have found useful advice on MSE for quite some time now, signed up to the forums earlier this year, but only started using them today :o

I have been a hand knitter since my Nan taught me when I was a little girl of just 6 years. My current project is a blanket, mittens, hat & bootees set for my sister's soon-to-be-born baby. I am halfway through the blanket, and have one mitten knit... I have about 5 weeks to finish the rest, which given the amount of time I have in a day to knit is going to be a close call. :)

I will update with pictures when I finish some of the items :D

I can second that recommendation. There are some fab ones on Ravelery especially if you add "cable" to your search. My biggest problem is deciding which one to tackle. There are sooooo many I'd love to knit.
