NJ, quick question re the Oh Baby Baby Booties.
When I'm doing the instep, picking up the stitches along the side, I seem to get the 'seams' created where the stitches are picked up on different sides of the work, unless I cut the yarn and reattach.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?Jack of all trades ... Master of none

Are you picking up stocking stitch? If so, perhaps you are picking up too far from the edge? I tend to put a dpn (a couple of sizes smaller) through the stitches I want to pick up, and then knit them off that dpn.
I have been knitting these boots in all garter stitch, so I just pick up 8 "ridges" from the edge.
Sorry, that's probably unhelpful if you're in stocking stitch. But if you pick up 8 sts on dpn first, at least you can vaguely check what the right side will look like.0 -
Cuddles, just had another thought. If you want to keep to stocking stitch, how about doing 1 or 2 stitches garter stitch each end of the 13 rows of instep stitches, then you'd have a ridge to pick up each side? I do this with top down socks.0

Hi
I am new to knitting....my mum has given me some needles and wool but now I am enjoying it so much I will soon need to buy wool! Can I ask a quick question? How much is a ball of wool on average? I have seen some DK wool for £1.10 for a 100g ball but have also seen it for £2.50+. I am knitting a blanket for winter so does not need to be really pretty well made wool. I have so far knitted 2 rows of my blanket, only another 4 to go! I have 8 different colour squares, 32st x 30 and knitted together to make a row as advise by my mum! I did ask my mum about the price but she doesnt know current prices as the last time she knitted was about 15 years ago!
Though my mum and nan did teach me when i was a child, i am now re-teaching myself with the help of the internet and i am fully enjoying knitting! Whoop!Proud mummy to an amazing 8 year old!0 -

Welcome to the thread!
Price will vary immensely depending on what your yarn is made of.
This week I bought:
100g dk Acrylic = £1.60 - Quite nice average acrylic
100g dk Acrylic = £1.35 - Beautifully soft acrylic
50g dk Superwash wool - £3.99 - nice, well it should be!
50g Millamia Merino - £4.95 - ouch, but it is for a very special pair of baby booties.
I would think acrylic would be good for blanket, and washing. Get out there and give it a squishy feel!0 -

Here are some more prices to compare (not all bought this month I hasten to add, just in case anyone wonders):
100g 25% wool, 75% Acrylic 4 ply - £2.50
100g 75% wool superwash sock wool (sorta 4 ply) - £8.50
50g 75% wool sock wool (sorta 4 ply) - £4.65
100g Noro Silk Garden Sock Wool- £13.75
800g aran- approx £8.50
50g DK (Sirdar)- £3.65
25g lace 2 ply- £3.65 (need a few for the pattern)
I am starting to buy less acrylic type yarns, but I do less baby knitting these days (and they are handy for that, mainly as they wash so well), I do a lot of socks and sock wool can be more expensive.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Thankyou!
I have noticed today that there is a knitting shop on my highstreet, closed today but I am going to pop in during the week. I had no clue on the prices of wool but thankyou very much for the info, i have alot to learn!! I think it will be a while before i knit anything to wear....though i do like the idea of some nice thick winter socks. No babies yet.....maybe in a couple of years.....then I am sure my mum will get her knitting needles out again! She told me she only likes to knit baby things!Proud mummy to an amazing 8 year old!0 -
I have a collection of knitting patterns and needles (mostly pre-metric) which I am not likely to use again. Does anyone know if they would be of use a Knitting Circle or charity shop?
If so, how do I find any takers (apart from the shops of course)0
