Hi all. My OHs uncle owns a spinning mill and has donated to me some real creamy white wool! I say real, as ive only knitted with the acrylic wool, this even smells of a sheep, i love it! Im not new to knitting as i was taught as a child but havent taken it up as a hobby until recently, so still quite a beginner. I made a baby hat for my new born neice last year, started a cardigan for her, with a simple pattern, but was confuzzled towards the end and havent finished it! I did make myself a scarf last week, love it. But im just unsure as to what to make with my new stash of wool! Any ideas for a beginner? Ive thought about some fingerless gloves or a slouchy beret hat, but are these too complicated for a beginner?

    Hi natc.
I hadn't knitted for a while but could remember garter and stockingstitch and that's all you need to know to make these lovely fingerless mittens. If I can make them anyone can. Posted a pic a few pages back. They are so easy to do :)http://whitegirlknits.blogspot.com/2010/12/pattern-magical-fingerless-mittens.html

  • Lucky lady to have access to beautiful yarn like that!

Thank you so much for the button hole tutorial - I've messed them up before and am just knitting a cardi that needs button holes, so am specially grateful!
Off to say with the friend who taught me to knit 18 months ago. Shall I hug her or bash her over the head?! I love her and call the time before I could knit the lost years, but it's given me a new obsession and my bank balance is squeaking!

That looks so warm and cosy. Well done.
Never tried socks. How many needles do you use?

I can just about manage 2 and a cable needle, but never tried 4.

I'm doing a cowl scarf with cables at the moment, but, like you, have had the dreaded cold and haven't even had the energy to knit for a few days.
Hit the cold with Beechams capsules - they do work!

Thanks, still got second one to do!
I normally use 4 needles for socks but the pattern I adapted this one from actually uses 5.
I tried socks (with 4 needles) using a cable design, so 5 pins in total- ended up binning it- well unravelled half of it but the rest went in a big knot!
    My dilemma now is:
    1. another sock ?
    2. second long mitten to match one I made already ?
    3. a new project ?
    I am edging toward 3 but really shouldn't ;)!

Do the second sock so you have a pair! (I try to knit my socks 2 at a time so I don't get "second sock syndrome")

I prefer knitting socks with 5dpns to 4dpns and am knitting a sock with cables at the moment but ahem *puffs out chest* I cable without a cable needle! This is a good tutorial OK I still use cable needles for bigger cables but honestly when it's a 4 stitch cable in a sock or just twists I can't be bothered with yet another needle to juggle with!

I bought a new ball of yarn to finish the cardigan I was knitting, all the knitting is done now and I've washed the pieces. I'm just waiting for them to dry so I can sew it together. I'm a bit nervous, I know how to join seams neatly but I've never seamed more than baby cardigans and those were in a newborn size so tiny, seaming an adult cardigan is filling me with panic! I've put so many hours into knitting it and I want the finished article to look good.

I'm trying not to cast on new projects. I've finished knitting my cardigan, finished a pair of socks started ages ago and am trying to finish a second pair of socks I started ages ago, once they're done I'm allowed to start something new and I'm looking at another cardigan pattern, one knit seamlessly so no sewing!

You little love :A that is not just a good tutorial ..... that is a great tutorial!!

Have always wanted to cable without a needle as figured it would be a lot quicker and stop my bad habit of sitting there with my cable needle in my mouth :o

Am so going to be trying that technique - thankyou

Thanks lambanana, I like to have more than one thing on the go though, staves off fedupwiththisproject-itis...........I really need a shawl. I tried that one like you did, but you will see it in my frogged projects, and so am doing a quick on on straight needles- more of a cape really, but going well and easy to knit!
At the moment I have on the go:
    1. Long mittens- second one cast on and will be on that soon (thin wool but great cheerful colours!).
    2. Purple Socks- first finished today, second will be along soon (lovely fluffy wool!)!
    3. Fuzzy scarf- really there when I need to pick up something so simple.....
    4. Cape- doing that full-time just now. Started today: it is 25 x 8 row repeat and on number 5 just now :).
Hope those seems come on ok, I am getting better but it does take time and practice (of course as it is the last part to be done it is hard to resist the temptation to rush just to see item finished!).
    xx
ETA Here is the beginnings of the shawl (not great pic as artificial light but you get the idea!)

saorsie You're right that is a fab tutorial - I'm forever sticking my cable needle in my jumper and stabbing myself with it
