  • Hi guys - quick question - I downloaded a free pattern from Alan Dart's website to knit the most adorable mice! The pattern says to use Hayfield Bonus DK wool. Now my question is does it have to be Hayfield Bonus or can it be any old DK wool? Thanks :)
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

Any double knitting wool should be fine

    Hello Charlie's Mum

I have knitted a few of Alan Dart's patterns and I generally use any acrylic DK. The little Post Office up the road sells some (can't remember the make!) for £1.29 for a biggish ball and the charity shop also does some. The thickness of the yarn seems to vary quite a lot but that has never seemed to be a problem with knitted toys, although I don't think I'd use it for a garment.

:hello:to everyone. That's twice I've slipped out of lurkyland in one day. Could get to be a habit!!!!!!!

Re the Alan Dart patterns, remember to check the ball band washing instructions- if it is a teddy that will need washed every so often!

I've just found a link off the Canadian Living website that Maman got her Aran cushion from and it's for Patternfish
where you can download (buy) and upload (sell) patterns that you have designed yourself.
Anyone tried to sell any of their designs on there yet?
What do we think? Looks a bit dull in the website design and they take 40% in commission - they're quite new I think - but there are a lot of patterns on there.

I've just discovered this thread and it is fab.

The little knitted mice are so cute, I might need to knit some of those up for next Christmas, thanks stressed.

Ravelry seems a better deal to me if you want to sell patterns. 5% for up to US$100 worth of sales, flat rates (but lower percentage) for sales over that - and I'd guess a wider audience too.

TBH I rarely look anywhere *other* than Ravelry for patterns these days - much of what's on other websites (including Patternfish) is linked on Rav, and therefore searchable from Rav, so it seems the best place to start, and I almost always find what I'm looking for, or something close enough to it that I can easily adapt. If I was trying to make money from designs, I'd go for selling through Rav first.
