I have a slight issue with my knitting - I am trying to knit a mug cosy, using DK on no.10 needles, but I keep splitting the ply of the wool as I bring my needle through. Am I just being terrible at knitting or is it the wool/wrong size needles/tension? I dont know, this did not happen when I knit a scarf a few months ago!

Thanks all for the advice on finishing. My cushion is now complete and I'm really pleased with it. In Saturday's paper there were one of those articles about Christmas gifts recommending this

    I think mine's just as good:D

Would love to see a pic of your version - was it the one from Woman's Weekly recently (also with a matching thow)? It looks identical to the White Company link you've given. What yarn did you use?
I've kept the pattern, but the suggested yarn is Rico Fashion Super Chunky - around £5.75 for a 100g ball:eek: it is 60% wool and 40% polyacryl. The throw - which I'm tempted to knit, takes 11 balls - anyone suggest a cheaper (but still wool/wool mix) alternative?

That's what I was thinking to begin with, it made it quite pretty, however as the length increased it became apparant that it was rather onesided.

    Thanks for replying :)

This pattern is difficult to get a good edge on. I believe I saw a similar scarf in the Boden catalogue last year (same sort of stitch) and I think if I remember correctly, that it had an edge of 2 garter stitches (plain) up each side. If you use this method, you may need to slip the first stitch at the beginning of every row as well - this gives a straight edge.
good luck with it -it does look very pretty!

Thanks for replying. Could you just look over my pattern adaptation please?

    The original pattern was:

    CO 20.

    Row 1-P across
Row 2-*K1 P1 K1 into same st, P3tog, rep from * to end
    Row 3-P across
Row 4-*P3tog, K1 P1 K1 into same st, rep from * to end

    So if I cast on 24 stitches;

    Row 1-slip 1, K1, P20, K2

    Row 2-slip 1, K1, *K1 P1 K1 into same st, P3tog, repeat from * to last 2 st, K2

    Row 3-slip 1, K1, P20, K2

    Row 4-slip 1, K1, *P3tog, K1 P1 K1 into same stitch, repeat from * to last 2 st, K2

Is that right? Should I do a couple of rows of garter stitch before starting the pattern, or given that the pattern calls for a purl row to begin with would that give me an odd ss row?

Sorry for the questions, my previous knitting projects have consisted of a stocking stitch square, garter stitch square and random strip of ribbing!

I wouldn't bother with 2 rows before starting - providing you are happy with the bottom edge that the pattern itself creates, because the real problem is the sides. Its just a matter of personal choice I think. And you're right- it may give you an odd ss row - may not show - only way is to do it I suppose, a pain I know, if it needs unpicking.
Your adaptation looks fine to me - you're doing very well for a beginner knitter.

Thanks for that. I think I'll leave the garter stitch rows as I don't think they'll look right. Am just doing my online shop, or will be, the site keeps going down, then will get that pulled down and restarted.

It's not as hard as I thought it would be, it's actually nice to be following a pattern rather than random stocking stitch squares. I used to sit and read the patterns to my Nan when I was little, so they don't seem as daunting as they may have done otherwise. It also means I don't have to keep looking up or trying to remember the abbreviations ;)

This is the cushion I've made (still not sure whether it needs the tassels):

and here's the link to the pattern http://www.canadianliving.com/crafts/knitting/aran_pillow.php

As this was somewhat experimental (my return to knitting after more years than I can remember) I used a cheap Aran (25%wool) from a local 'bargain' type shop. I can't remember exact price but I think about £7 for 400g ball. I had lots left and then bought more to make a matching draught excluder. I've used a taupe colour rather like White Company one. HTH.

Next project, even, easier I'm going to make coat hangers similar to these (a la CK):
    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQsAxD_RK8Ff9BPFstaHffxnhf4OryV-YCZWfmn3LQ2Xe6O654QdA
These are crocheted but I'm going to knit them and I have plenty of felt bits and ribbon to do the flowers.

One day I'll learn to post my own photos.:o

    Good Morning all knitters

Sorry to butt in - I'm a chronic lurker on this thread!! I love your cushion, Maman, and thank you for posting the link. I love White Company - and we have a new branch opened here. I am unavoidably drawn in to drool each time I go in to town, but their prices are high - so I try to get their look on a budget.

Co-incidently we also have a newly opened CK. I am attracted to their look, but I find too much of it overwhelming. I love the coathangers and need to buy new, so I am tempted to get a bundle from Ikea and cover them - but whether to cover them in CK colours or to go for White Co. neutrals is my dilemma.

Just now I'm finishing off a little jacket for a friend of my daughter who is expecting a little girl in February. I have knitting and crochet on the go for my daughter who is booked for a caesarian on Wednesday of next week but we don't know whether she is to have a girl or a boy. Exciting times!!!!

:wave:Hello Susan. I'm doing the first coathangers in the same taupe yarn as the cushion (to use it up) but I might venture into brighter colours later if I'm pleased with the outcome. I think they would make good gifts too.

Good luck to your daughter and friend. The knitting's the easy bit!:)
