all the patterns I can find (and I really think I've looked everywhere) are for knitting in the round which I can't do. :o:o:o

Even if you're knitting with four or five needles or one/two circulars in the round you're only actually making the stitches with two of them you know, same as with flat knitting. It really is just that simple. Give it another go in a spirit of determination.....!

Hoping one of you clever people will be able to help.

Have just started knitting again (after a break of 20-odd years). I'm using DK and have done the tension square of 28st and 36 rows which should be 4". But when I did it, the width is 4.5" and the rows are 3". So I don't know whether to increase or decrease the needle size !!

28 x 36 sounds like the tension square should be knitted in stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl) in 4ply, on something like 3mm needles? But the fact you're getting a wider but shorter tension square makes me think you've knitter the tension square in garter stitch. (All rows knitted). I could be wrong of course but it's just a thought!

Hi, I wonder if any of you good people could help me out?

I've found a great knitting pattern on line for babies 'denim jeans' knitted from Rowan Denim (sorry, don't know how to direct you to pattern) - can anyone tell me to where I could buy the wool cheaper that this from the Rowan on site store - £3.75 per 50g ball (I will need 3) plus £2+ (not sure how much) postage, which would make them almost £15 to make  These are really cute but pretty expensive to make for a baby!

I've tried my local (market) knitting shops but neither of them sell it, nor could they let me know where I could get it from.

    Thank you.

Thing is about Rowan Denim is that it shrinks up to 20% lengthways on the first wash and the pattern is sized to accomodate this. You can adapt the pattern to use any cotton DK of course but it's a faff. Cheaper alternatives are Sirdar Indigo (discontinued, but still around) and cones of Den-Im-It. You can get both on Ebay. Actually I've got half a cone of Den-im-It sitting here doing nothing...if you'd like it for the postage money, just send me a message.

    Hello All

I've just been on holiday in Northumberland and while we were there we visited St Abbs just over the Scottish border. There was a gorgeous wool shop there. It sold luxury wools and I was totally blown away. Didn't buy anything as OH was having a fit at the prices but I did get a card with the web address on if anyone is interested.

Get a tissue before you look though because you'll be drooling !

It's a lovely shop and the lady who runs it is really friendly. Incidentally she has regular mini Wool Festivals in the local community centre where independant wool suppliers come and set up stalls...all the local dyers that normally sell via mail order only like Spinning a Yarn, The Yarn Yard and The Border Tart. Plus her own yarns, and a cafe with home made soup and scones etc. It's a nice day out. I think the next one is in November.

(Oh, and if there's a spinner doing spinning demos, that's quite likely to be me. So come and say hello.:) )

some day I'll nip down there and see you :)
  • Pennib - the cardigan is absolutely lovely! It doesn't matter what you're knitting with if you like the colour and the pattern and enjoy knitting it.

It's national wool week this week so I may have treated myself to a skein of locally dyed laceweight :o

I am trying to make the sleeve of a cardigan 19 inches in length and the correct size (largest) so that it fits into the arm hole.
Please can you help me work out where to adjust the pattern?
    Thank you.
The pattern for the sleeve reads as follows:
    Work with 6mm needles caser on 27 (29: 29: 31: 31: 33 stitches)
(I have been using size 5 ½ needles in order to get the correct tension...as advised by the tension guide on the pattern)
Work 10 rows in gst inc 1 st at teach end of the 9th row.
    Change to 8mm needles
(I have used 7 ½ mm for the reason stated above).
    Begin with a K row and work st-st inc 1st stitch at each end of the 5th (5th: 5th: 5th: 5th: 3rd:3rd) and every foll 6 (6: 6: 6: 6: 4: 4) to 45 (51: 51: 53: 53: 43:43)sts, then every foll 0 (0: 0: 0: 6th, 6th) row to 45 (51: 51: 53: 53: 57:57) sts.
    Work straight in st-st until Sleeve measures 15 ½,( 17 ½) 17 ½: 18: 18: 18 ½ 19) from begin, ending with a P row.
I tried doing above and ended up with 52 stitches on the needle and 18 inchs in length – at this point.
    Work 4 (5: 6: 6: 8: 9: 10) more rows in St St.
    Shape Top
    Dec 1 st at end end of the next and foll 3 alt rows. 37 (43: 43: 45: 45: 49: 49) sts.
Cast off 10 stitches at beg on next 2 rows.
    Cast of rem 17 (23: 23: 25: 29: 29st)
    The End!!
Do u think that it may be my tension...I could re knit the tension sample just incase and post the measurements.

Hmm it's possibly your tension over the number of rows that is out though generally (particuarly where instructions are "knit until it is XXinches") row tension is not as important as getting the right number of stitches per inch. Is it possible that you have missed an increase somewhere? Double check you increased on the 3rd, 7th, 11th, 15th, 19th, 23rd (that's every 4 rows after 3rd row increase up to 43sts) 29th, 35th, 31st and 37th (every 6 rows) row by two stitches each time (I think that's right!) which should give 57 stitches. My guess is that you may have missed an increase somewhere, I write down which rows the increases should come on and cross them off as I get to them whilst counting rows on a little row counter at the same time...anything to try keep track and avoid ripping back!

How many rows per 4" should you be getting to get the correct tension according to the pattern? That should also tell you whether or not you have missed some of your increases or knit too many rows because at this point you should have done 47 rows (including your 10 rows of garter stitch for the cuff)

Good luck with your pattern...don't know how helpful my advice was (if at all) but I sympathise on not getting tension and the frustrations of following a knitting pattern!!

If you have 18 inches at the point you indicated, and only 52 stitches, instead of 57 stitches, it looks like you might have gone a bit wrong somewhere in the increase sequence. Is the wool double knit? How many rows are there to the inch? what is the finnished length of the sleeve meant to be?

I would keep adding the extra missing stitches as evenly as I can through the last inch until you get 19 inches, and keep going into the knit 10 rows in St St section, it's only 5 stitches so it should be easy to do.

If it doesn't look right after doing this, then I think an unraval and start again is your only option, but don't do that until the other sleeve is done, if you get that right and the two are near enough the same, then don't bother.
