OrkneyStar -You are right about the looseness of the DK...I am knitting them for folk who use thick socks when walking across the hills...or just for slouching about the house. Here is a piccie of my first ever pair, using 4 pins and Silver's sock tutorial. I found them really easy to make, having no problems with shaping and turning the heel...and like the grafting for the toes!
Orkney, you have inspired me to try some fancier socks now...found some heather (purple) 4-ply in my stash (how did that get there!!), and I am having a go at the circle socks....will post a piccie when I am done.
Been looking at loads of different places to get 4-ply wool and have ordered this today...should get loads of socks (and other things!) out of this!!If I like the wool, I will order another cone or two so I can mix the colours. Chose this colour as DH and my Dad will wear socks this colour....traditionalists!!
Right off to check how DS2 is getting on with making pizza for tea.
Keiss those socks are lovely...are they Regia. I like the grafting like that too - once you get the hang of it - it really looks professional!0 -
Thanks for your kind comments...the wool is Sirdar Crofter DK - Bracken. It makes a warm slouchy sock...for a better fit I should use 4-ply, sock wool in particular...would love to try some Regia or Noro sometime!!

I've just started my first piece of knitting in over ten years. It's a long sleeveless cardigan, in a red chunky yarn. The pattern has cables running up the front, which looks nice, but the back is also cabled. I'm a bit concerned this will look too bulky as I'm quite a chunky person and also short. Do you knitting gurus think I should leave the back plain, if so, would it be best with the purl or the plain on the outside? Or would a broad rib keep the style without the extra bulk of the cables?Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

Lovely socks Keiss- what wool is that ? It looks like crofter but thinner ?
.
Kunekune- I wonder if chunky knitting will actually make you look less chunky, as the eye will be drawn to the chunkiness of the knit and not anything else ? Just a though!

Kunekune.....you could use a broad rib if you think that the cable would be too chunky, it would look well I think.

thanks!
Pure Cashmere and alpaca have very little 'give' in them. They tend to stretch after a while and don't spring back into shape. I've made a lot of hats and fingerless gloves with both alpaca and cashmere and they don't keep their shape well.
I would go for aran, double knit or 4-ply weight blend of cashmere and merino wool. It's sometimes called cashwool, cashmerino, cashsoft and other variations, and is made by Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Sublime or from independent wool mills like Kingcraig Fabrics that sell on Ebay (Kingcraig does a merino/alpaca blend too). The merino blends are a joy to knit with - beautifully soft and springy.
Good luck!0 -
NualaBuala I refuse to be held responsible if you have to live on bread and dripping because you spent your grocery budget on socks!
I may have bought a bit of yarn to celebrate Wool Week last week. Only a bit though...some lace, some sock yarn and some DK to make another hat. All I can think of right now is wooly hats and scarves, it's definitely getting colder!
I have fallen out with the cardigan I was knitting, I thought I had been making good progress on my left front and had finished the first lot of decreases only to noticed I'd miss-crossed my cable rows back and it looks a mess, also I'm using Patons Pompero which is a 'mare to frog as the fibres all stick to each other. The cardigan is now in the naughty corner thinking about what it's done whilst I knit other things and build up the strength to rip back!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member #398 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts :T
