If it feels hard it may be that you need to use bigger size needles. I'd be using 6 or 7 (sorry can't do mm's) with Arran.
If you don't alternate the 5 knit and purl on each row it will make it roll. So - 5 knit on next row above the 5 purl and 5 purl above the 5 knit will make it lie flat HTH.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

this looks lovely, what stitch did you use? it looks like it might be one of those that are quite easy but really hard, would you mind sharing. not knitted anything more adventurous that scarves or baby things since i have re started knitting after a 20 year lapse. not very experienced so hope magazines i bout last year will help me progress as i work my way throughthe mag. also when ever i see pattern i like i look up wool and it is usually quite expensive and not confident enough to buy similar in case it doesnt come out right, any suugestions greatfully received
I used this tutorial for my scarf:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BcKpETZ-9s
The pattern is fairly simple. CO 20, K 2 rows, next row K1 YO twice. Repeat till the end of the row. Next row K 1, drop 2 YO until the end of the row. Repeat the knit 2 rows and yarn on yarn off until the scarf is long enough. The good thing about this scarf is that it doesn't use lots of wool. I used 50g of yarn for the whole thing. The youtube vid uses 6mm needles, I used 4.5mm for mine.0 -
I used 5.5mm needles. will try again! xMake £10 a day challenge March 2013 £101.24 / £240 :j

Hi, I hope that you don't mind me butting in as I'm not a knitter but would love to send a knitted Raymond Briggs Snowman to my grandson in New Zealand. (No snow there at Christmas:()
I've looked on ebay (there's a sirdar pattern) and wondered if any of you had some other suggestions where I could look please?:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Thanks Red balloon, sorry, I didn't explain it very well.:o
I was looking for an already-knitted one. (He'd be grown up before I mastered a knitting pattern!) I wondered if there was some site apart from ebay where home-knitted goods are sold? Thanks again:)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Hoping one of you clever people will be able to help.
Have just started knitting again (after a break of 20-odd years). I'm using DK and have done the tension square of 28st and 36 rows which should be 4". But when I did it, the width is 4.5" and the rows are 3". So I don't know whether to increase or decrease the needle size !!0 -

If the knitting is too big then decrease the needle size. Normally double knitting wool will use a 4mm needle so try and 3.75mm one.
Good luck0
