My daughter has recently had a beautiful girl. I too thought that today's young mum's weren't in favour of matinee coats. At least I did think that, until daughter demanded to know why I wasn't looking forward to this particular birth - as I hadn't done any knitting for the impending arrival!

Had to hastily dig out the patterns and needles all over again and get stuck in - I let daughter select the patterns, as I was so keen 'not to get it wrong'! She chose patterns from my complete range (1940's - 1990's).

To be honest, the only baby style things that I would avoid these days are those all-in-one knitted suits for little boys that fasten between the legs (used to be called romper suits 'in my day!'. I would also recommend to avoid using any old Quickerknit patterns - the availability/choice of colours these days is not good. My local market stall does still sell QK but the colours are definitely not nice (very wishy-washy shades of peach, pink, blue and lemon and a dirty-looking white!)

In a gloomy mood - last night I had to pull down a complicated lace patterned sleeve. How did I miss the fact that it was too narrow to go round my arm as I was knitting it!

    Bu**er :p
  • O dear, moanymoany, it's awful pulling back your hard work but I always say, just do it, get it right and three month's you will have forgotten all that agony.

Thankyou both for your encouragement on matinee coats, I think they look gorgeous over little girl's dresses. Both of the mum's to be have said they want knitted things so I think if little girl's arrive they will get worn.

It's so easy to put yourself on the back burner thinking things are old fashioned but as you say mm there are not very many knitting grannies these days. Perhap if we knitters keep encouraging each other and 'fly the flag' matinee coats will be top fashion for babies in no time.

  • I do matinee coats for babies, but I generally decrease the length of them a bit - instead of 6" to the armhole I do 4.5". I love rooting in charity shops for patterns.

more and more people are wanting home made things now (have you seen the prices charged on 'home made' online shops?) so I'm sure matinee jackets would be very popular with the majority of mums.

Sadly they were totally out of fashion when my dgd was born and dd said she didnt want any!
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • QOTD Have you got your tracker hat pattern yet. I have just been to the shops and spotted a hat very similar on the front of the Knit Today magazine. Mind you the mag. is £3.99. HTH

I would love to have a go at knitting a mohair bolero/shrug to wear to our office xmas party. Does anyone have any ideas, tips? Hopefully a freebie, but anything concidered. I have good knitting skills but not an expert. Sewing up is'nt a strong point either. Thanks in advance.

In The Body Shop yesterday I noticed that they are selling cream chenille face cloths, about 8" square, which are either crocheted or knitted on quite large needles. I'm not very good on crochet, but I think that they were doubles, done with a large hook.
If anyone else sees them then I'm sure that they could give a better description, but I thought that it was another good OS idea for Christmas beauty hampers.
