To all you sock knitters out there can i ask how the hell do you tell the needles apart? you know when it gets to needle 1 , 2 etc in patterns cos i`ve knit 1 pr up to now but struggled like mad !!
Can i number them with something ?

I highly recommend buying a row counter, like this:

They're a couple of quid and you stick one on the end of the last needle in the round. It not only lets you know when you're starting a new round, it also helps you keep track of what row you're on! :D I won't knit in the round without one now.

Shawl of epicness update: I'm still going! have done 53 rows (out of approx. 606 ) But I need to finish knitting a hat for a friend too.
    Sum quod sum.

Well somebody said they fit better and dont fall down. I didnt really fancy them at all but thought I would try because so many people are telling me they are a perfect fit. I thought I would knit a pair and see. But will look very odd !

Evening to those that are still up.

I am trying to knit a simple cupcake to practice changing colours.

For some reason this has come out all wrong. Supposed to be one colour base with contrast colour icing running down. Mine looks more like waves curling over before breaking.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong as I've checked and double checked and can't work it out.

    Cast on 40 sts
    StSt 10 rows
    Row 11
With pink k2,k6 fawn ,k2 pink ,k6 fawn, k2 pink continue in this sequence ending with k6 fawn.

    Row 12
    P3 pink, P4 fawn, P4 Pink, P4 Fawn, P4 pink,P4 Fawn
continue in this sequence ending with P3 pink.

    Row 13
    k4 pink, k2 fawn,k6 pink,k2fawn,k6 pink,k2 fawn,continue in this sequence ending with k2 pink

Why do her socks fall down? Is it because she has very slim legs? Maybe adjusting the number of stitches in the leg of your pattern would help, or using a rib-pattern on the leg. Other things that sometimes help are knitting a longer rib section at the top of the leg or knitting a longer leg overall (because then the sock goes higher up the leg, and legs tend to be wider further up). You could also try adding some knitting elastic to the rib section.

Csarina I went to Lidl too today and bought 4 packs too for socks along with 3 packs of dpns and 3 packs of circular needles and a pack of scarf wool too- yes I did get a bit carried away:o. I have never made socks before so had no idea which needles to get so I decided that seeing as they were cheap I might as well buy the lot!

What did you think to the quality of the wool? The scarf wool felt very similar to the chunky wool I am knitting with at the moment which is £2.99 a ball. I thought the sock wool felt nice too although it is quite fine 4ply? so will take me forever seeing as I am a beginner.

Could anyone recommend a beginners sock pattern from Ravelry please? There seem so many to choose from that I have no idea what to choose.

  • I did take a look at the wool stuff today, but didn't feel brave enough to buy any, but I did treat myself to the sewing machine though. :o

thrifty Silver's sock class is your friend http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/ takes you through step by step how to knit a sock on DPNs or toe up socks (I have only ever knit cuff down on DPNs but a lot of people prefer toe up and 1 circular needle for magic loop or 2 circular needles) there are loads of pictures and detailed instructions. Beware, it's addictive!!
kezbabybabe you should give knitting a go, it isn't scary and no one will get hurt if you make a mistake, the worst that can happen is you have to rip it out and start again!

I've knit a few more rows on my lace shawl today, only 3 (well two and a bit as started one) repeats of the main chart and the border to knit so I should make my deadline of just under 4 weeks for finishing it. It's very lovely but I'm not looking forward to the 350+ stitch rows at the border, not so much the right side which is interesting but purling back...yawn!

Oh yeah of course. ;) I already have a project in mind, a comfort wrap from my book, I've already got 5 balls of Sirdar Bigga which a kind soul from Ravalry gifted me, just need another 8 balls! Oh and I still need a set of 15mm needles and 1 cable needle to get started. :o
