I have figured out my issue and need help how to overcome. I cast on fine and tighten the wool enough to stay on the needle but do not over tighten then knit the first row. By the time I get to the second row the wool on the needle has become impossibly tight, so I can not get the needles through the loops and cannot knit any more. I have tried different wools (different thickness) and always get the same issue. What am I doing wrong?

Sometimes the reason for very tight knitting is that the stitches are being formed too close to the end of the needle, near its point. The needle is narrower there, and so each stitch is smaller, and when you slide the stitches onto the main (wider) part of the needle, they will be tight. It's not a big deal for each individual stitch, which is why it isn't immediately obvious, but when you have a row of stitches, each one just slightly too tight to fit comfortably on the thickest part of your needle, each stitch is fighting with its neighbours for the little bit of extra yarn it needs.

Ideally you want the stitches to be close to the end of the needle they are *leaving* - i.e. if you knit right-handed, the stitches should be close to the end of the needle in your left hand, which makes it easy to insert the right needle into each stitch to knit it. But each new loop should be formed just where the right needle reaches its widest - or at least it should be slid back onto the thickest part of the right needle as soon as it is formed.

Pablosmummy - My husband rolled at the idea of hand knitted socks until he put on the first pair...now he wants more and more and MORE SOCKS . Maybe you could knit yourself a pair first and tell him what a pity he doesnt like knitted socks and his feet will be freezing.. :)
What about a neckwarmer ? - neck warmers are a lot less sissyish than scarves. Mine wouldn't wear a scarf ever but a neckwarmer just looks like a polo neck really.
I am a fair isle knitter and have never done lace....these fitted gorgeous cardigans are all lace. I dono if I could do it without going insane. But I wantttt...:D
  • Lol at the bathing suit, maybe I will make it and pretend its a serious present!

Now I'm wondering of there are some kind of manly slippers I could make. I've got some of the ballet slipper style I've knitted but maybe I could find a man pattern? Anyone know any?

I've tried knitting socks before but I just get bored with it! I dont know why because I can knit blankets, jumpers etc witout getting bored, but socks drive me crazy

    Hello,

Ive been lurking for a while now but have never posted. Following on from the link with vintage patterns for men, I was looking for ideas on what I could knit for OH for christmas!

So far I'm planning on a knitted tie and a checkers set but was wondering if there were any other ideas. He wont wear knitted socks and a jumper is too big (I'm a lazy knitter..)

I was thinking about a scarf but I cant think of when hes ever even worn a scarf before...

any ideas? He's mid 20s if that helps

    Thanks

Men are so difficult aren't they! How about a hat? or gloves?

It doesn't have to be something he'd wear, a cup warmer or cuddly toy maybe?
