What goes around, comes around!
I'm very excited here - I've just been given my nana's and mum's old knitting patterns plus odd pairs of needles some of which go back to when pattens were only about 3d (pre-war)! It was great looking through them, it was like trip down memory lane remembering all the stuff they had knit for the family. There are some really good basic patterns too, like cardigans and jumpers, as well as some very strange looking ladies hats!
I've just picked out a zip up bomber jacket to knit for my GS which is bang up to date! (that was priced at 6p, and a baby's cardigan priced at 3d). It seems that they did a lot of knitting in 2, 3 and 4ply in them days!!!
Now the reason I've mentioned all this is because most of the original wool stated is not longer available and the bomber jacket is in quickerknit - should this be done in double or chunky? I've looked at the quantities and needle sizes and I reckon it would be double - has anyone any idea?

Have a look here: http://www.cpu-enterprises.com/index.html
I order all my wool from them (mostly crochet as I am so impatient!) and I'm sure I saw quickerknit on there somewhere?:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

1stTimer,
AS someone who probably used some of your patterns the first time around, I can tell you that quickerknit was in between 4ply and DK in thickness, so you will, I guess, have to use one or the other and do a tension sample. DK will use a bit more wool than the pattern says, 4ply a bit less. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone:) Oh yes knitting is so relaxing, isn't it? I am currently knitting a lovely tunic from the Let's Knit magazine, and it is quite adventurous for me, but so far am coping okay with the pattern. The wool is a lovely shade as well which I chose and will be so proud to be able to complete it. Knitting is very addictive, and I just love it:) happy clicking everyone:)Do a little kindness every day.;)0

Which tunic is that Margaret. I always look at the patterns and think ooh that looks nice but then don't go any further because I think it won't look good on me :rotfl:Did owe £9,951.96

1sttimer....that is so exciting, wish I had all the patterns that my late mother knitted from, I do have a few very old ones, mainly baby patterns.
I think that in my childhood we didn't have double knitting...the quickerknit was, I think the first venture into a thicker knitting wool, so most patterns were for 2,3 and 4 ply wool....someone tell me I'm not mad please.
Good luck with your pattern stash

Thanks Trow, that link is really good. I'll have to let you know how I get on with the Rowan Cotton Glace substitue.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking about Christmas. Lot of my friends have had babies this year. My parent always gave us our own decoration each year so when we left home we had a bundle to take with us. I'm wondering if there are any good patterns for knitted decorations out there? I thought it would be a nice little personal present without costing a fortune. Any ideas gratefully received!0 -
Hi there -
Alan Dart does some fab ones...available as a pdf download from his website....
http://www.alandart.co.uk/pages/products
I think the pattern for all the decorations (and from memory there are 25 of them, but I could be wrong) is about £3 or something.
and Jean Greenhowe does some fab mini Christmas stockings (free pattern) http://www.jeangreenhowe.com/Images/Mini_Christmas_Stockings.pdf
which maybe you could put a little gift inside?
Also - have a look on Ravelry for patterns, or Knitting Pattern Central; always a good source for stuff!
Hope some of the above help -

I bought a load of purple fun fur when it was really cheap. I now find I haven't a clue what to knit with it.
I knit mainly pure wool for warmth, don't really like acrylic. Could anybody give me ideas on what to knit with this stuff that might be useful for xmas pressies?0
