Hi Herbaholic - your squares look lovely with a great texture. It would be great if your OH can make you a bigger loom - I'd love to see the results of that. It's great that you are going to knit something for Loving Hands. If you fancy even more knitting, look for our thread on here, 'Knit Your Square to Give Your Share'. We have been knitting since March and have achieved fantastic results so far. If you go on the very first post there, there is a lot of info, links to patterns - especially for baby things - and a link to our Yahoo group. There is also a link to Bev's Country Cottage where you'll find loads of patterns. You would be most welcome to join us! Loving Hands also has baby patterns.

    Hi all

This week I have decided its time to learn how to knit :j I've been to the library and got myself some books on how to do the basic stitches etc and I'm all set with my needles and wool.

Today I've been having a go at garter stitch and stocking stitch but both of the look the same? I seem to have a row on one side of the work that looks different (where I have gone from knit stitch into pearl stitch) but then from there up the stocking stitch just looks like garter stitch?

Am I going mad or can somone tell me what I am doing wrong?

By the way some of your work looks great-I am hoping to have a go at scarf soon woohoo! :T
    2008 is the year to:
1.Sort out electricity meter (if its the last thing I do-at least is means my other half will be left with the bill  )
2.Save enough c/card points for holiday to Mauritius next year
3.Start stoozing-maybe a slow one to begin with!

Littleme - the reverse side of stocking stitch looks like garter stitch; if it looks like garter stitch both sides then you must have been either knitting or purling each row. Try a small test piece first, say 10 stitches and knit an inch in garter stitch and an inch in stocking stitch so that you can see the difference. If you use a row counter and start the stocking stitch with a knit row (row 1) you'll know that odd number rows will be knit rows and the even numbers rows will be purl rows. You'll soon get the hang of it.

Soba - your bride and groom are lovely! They're from one of the Jean Greenhowe books aren't they? You've done a great job with them!

and where can I get lanolin or untreated wool from?
Thanks, and when i have done the hat I'm knitting (very basic it has to be said) i may post a pic...

I want to knit a baby cardigan for a pregnant friend. The pattern I've got uses 100% pure yak down!! That's not readily available here, but the pattern specifies 5.5mm needles. Can anyone recommend a yarn to suit? I have seen the yak down on American websites but at $28 a skein I' rather not use it!
