Having used the MSE method last year, I was still not happy until I chanced upon house insurance offered by Sainsburys. This is a rebadged Halifax product and for me much cheaper than the comparison website, despite endless faffing with hopping to the actual insurers.
House rebuilding cost also unlimited. Several useful freebies included.
Usual story re Year 2 - much cheaper to start afresh online than renew.

Hi
We do not have a mortgage. We were able to pay it off when my husband retired. We have had our home insurance renewal and I was wondering if we could save money by cancelling our Buildings Insurance. Is it really necessary, or am I tempting fate?
Thanks

Personally, I think that you would be mad to cancel your buildings insurance. Although no longer required by a mortgage lender, what would you do if your house burnt down in a fire, or similar? How would you finance the rebuilding? Presumably you would need to take out a further mortgage to cover the costs.
As well as fire damage, you buildings insurance will cover the cost of repairing damage by storm, flood, vehicle impact, theft, etc.
There are some things that you can do to save money, but I would suggest that not having any buildings insurance is not one of them. You will at least have some peace of mind in the event that something does happen.
Try shopping around for a lower quote instead.0 -
I agree with the previous poster.
Just because you don't have a mortgage, doesn't mean you don't want insurance for things like subsidence or fire.
The areas that you might be able to cut back on are life insurance, sickness insurance and redundancy insurance.
You might need lower amounts of these because you do not have the on-ging costs of a mortgage.0 -
If you decide to have insurance never just renew it. Shop around and you will save a lot of money. Read my post #3 in ' post office car insurance' thread. With building insurance everithing is the same...0

Hi everyone
Just a little warning be more vigilant than me.
I have had my contents insurance with Royal Sun Alliance for many years and always felt that they were very expensive but never really done anythins about it.
Whilst going through my post last week found a letter from More Than (who have taken over Royal Sun Alliance) saying that they have increased my legal cover, so I rang them to complain as I have not asked for it to be increased.
The lady I spoke to had a look and said no there is no increase in charge they were just bringing everyone up to the same level.
I said can you tell me why my policy is so expensive (26,500 cover plus accidental damage costing £430.00 a year) she said yes it does seem high I will do you a new quote, she did and it came out at £130 a year which covers my son's contents at university as well!. I could not believe it why had I been paying all this money for all these years she said because Royal Sun Alliance is more expensive than More Than aeven though More Than had taken them over the existing customers were charged the old rates!
So be warned check your policies.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your advice, after trying for ages to get a good quote from firms flagged up by the supermarket insure checker, I got a brill quote from Chase Templeton which was over a 100 quid cheaper than the renewal from Tesco. I live in a flat which seems to put a lot of insurance companies off, so was really pleased. The other plus for them is they are sooooo helpful and friendly!0
