Naan bread recipe.

Hiya all

Wonder if anyone has made the above. I followed the recipe in the booklet and have to say that though it was ok, and nothing like Naan bread you buy, it was rather tasteless and needed some kind of oomphing up.

I was thinking about adding some cumin seeds and possibly some coriander, but wondered if any of you had some suggestions???

Many thanks :)

  • I tried this as well in the SD253 and wasn't over the moon with the result. However, the other half of the dough made quite a nice, bit different, pizza base.

I have made really authentic tasting naan in my Panny, but I used a different recipe.

This recipe comes from the book "Bread Machines & Beyond" by Jenny Shapter.

    In the Breadpan
    1 tsp easy blend yeast
    280g Strong White Flour
    4 tbsp natural yoghurt
    1 garlic clove finely chopped
1 tsp black onion seeds (v cheap from indian supermarket)
    1tsp ground coriander
    1tsp salt
    2 tsp clear honey
1 tbsp melted butter (or ghee)
    100ml water

After the Panny has done its work
    1tbs fresh coriander

a little melted butter for glazing the cooked naan

    Method
1.Put the ingredients in your breadpan, starting with the yeast, then the flour, then the others (normal order for Panny).

    2. Put the machine on the pizza dough cycle (45 mins for the Panny)

    3. When finished, put your oven on to pre-heat on its highest setting, and put baking sheets in there. Tip out the dough onto a floured board, punch down, and knead in 1tbsp fresh coriander. Divide the dough in three pieces

    4. Shape each pece into a ball. Work with one, keeping the other two covered while you do so. Roll out into a large teardrop shape, about 1/4 in to 1/2 in thick

    5. At this point, put you grill on to its highest setting too.

    6. Put the nan in the hot oven on the preheated baking sheets for 4 to 5 mins. They will puff up.

    7. Remove the baking sheet(s) from the oven, and put them under the grill for a few seconds, until the naan start to brown and blister.

    8. Brush with melted ghee or butter, and serve warm.

For a plain naan, omit the coriander, garlic and black onion seeds.

    Absolutely lovely!
  • Hi :D

To cut a long story short, my shopping isn't being delivered when I need it so I'm having to cook a meal for four out of my cupboards. I've found everything I need to do curry but want to naan bread to go with it. I found Curry_Queen's recipe and want to do that. The only problem I have is that I don't have enough oil (it's in the shopping list  ). Do you think that I would be ok to use melted marg, or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Thanks for helping! I'm not sure if I can manage to squeeze a tbsp of oil out of the dregs of the bottle. I've run out of everything all at once this week  I might try melting marg and see how that goes but thanks for the website link though, I didn't know anything like that exsisted, think I'm gonna get hooked on that one quite quickly!

I have Hovis Fast Action Yeast, is that the same a dried yeast? Sorry for all the questions but I never have any luck when it comes to bread products!

  • hello :hello:

if you do a search on bbc.co.uk/food (sorry can't do links) the recipes seem to just use flour and water. I made some naan breads last week like this. (funnily enough asda were delivering the next day so I didn't want to buy anything, i made potato and lentil curry!)
The bread doesn't taste exactly like naan so I changed the name to flatbread! but they were ok. I made bhajis too from onion, flour and curry powder. They worked well too.

Does anyone know a recipe to make naan bread in a bread maker. (Sorry if this has been posted before but i've been searching for ages and not found anything).

    Thanks
  • From my panasonic breadmaker recipe booklet:

    1/2 tsp yeast
    250g strong white flour
    1tsp sugar
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1tbsp veg oil
    2tbsp natural yogurt
    100ml water

    Use basic dough program.
Divide dough into 4 balls, roll into oval shapes 25x10cm, place onto greased baking sheets, bake under pre-heated grill for 2-3 mins each side until browned and well puffed. NB must be cooked under a very hot grill to create the air pocket inside the bread.

I often chuck in some sultanas and dessicated coconut - lovely.
I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!
