Naan Bread
450g SR flour
1/2tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
2tbsp veg oil
4 tbsp plain yoghurt (beaten)
2 eggs (beaten)
150ml water approx
(can add garlic, herbs, spices to flavour)
Sift flour, salt, baking powder into bowl and add oil, yoghurt and eggs (plus any herbs/spices you want to add) and mix. Add water slowly, using hands to bring together until you have a soft dough. Knead with wet hands for a couple mins then leave to rest for 15 mins.
Pre-heat oven to highest temp and place baking tray in to heat up.
Divide dough into 6 equal portions, and with floured hands roll each piece into a ball in palms of hand. Pull each ball out into a tear shape and place 2 at a time onto hot baking baking tray and return to oven immediately for about 3-4 minutes. Remove tray from oven and place under hot grill for about 30 seconds to brown and crisp top lightly. Keep warm in clean tea-towel.
will let you know how they turn out . knowing me well..
I made this recipe yesterday, but please could somebody clarify whether the yogurt should be straight from the fridge or at room temp? I used it from very cold and as a result 4 tbsp meant I used an entire 200ml tub - pretty sure this was too much yogurt as I still had approx 50ml water left and it was quite sticky (is it right that 1 tbsp = 25 ml so 4tbsp should have been 100ml?)
Also approx how thick should these be pulled/rolled out before baking? I wasn't sure which way they would 'grow' during cooking so must've made them too thick as they puffed up rather than spread out and resembled pies. As a result had to slice them in half so they didn't taste very authentic - were nice enough but more like bread rather than naan. Maybe it was the excess yogurt too? Anyhows according to the kids they were the "best bread I've made" and they've taken the two leftover naans for their lunch today filled with cheese & tomato:).
Would really like to make them properly next time tho.
Thanks

Every time I go to the restaurant, whether there are two people or ten, I prefer the naan tokri to order. It’s the most amazing thing where you can have different types of naan at the same time. There’s some recipes on Living Foodz too if you want to make at your home.0
