Just called First Direct to complain about £50 charges. Took a while but eventually got them down to £25. Will try to reclaim that when court cases are finalised. I quoted moneysavingexpert.com at them and also indicated I would close my account. A small victory but better than nothing!0

Hi folks
Ive gone over my overdraft limit due to difficult month. The bank then charged me £50 for this!!!! How is this supposed to help me get back in the black??!!
Is there any way of reclaiming this and if so how long does it take?
Thanks Chris0 -
Try phoning them up, and asking for the money back first ,it worked for me:j if you have no luck start to prepare your reclaim , All procedures and links needed are on this website.:D

I am so proud of myself . I just got HSBC to refund the £25 annual review fee for my overdraft. First of all they tried saying that they would refund the money but then end my overdraft facility. Do they think I'm stupid?
So I says, with a broad London cabbie accent, "Listen pal, three months ago you charged me a £25 overdraft arrangement fee because I kept going over my limit, and now you're charging me again because it's 'part of an annual review' - I don't think so, that's theft mate. HSBC is stealing from me. Not only that but I've also incurred £300 of unauthorised overdraft charges since March 2008. So, I've spent £325 on my overdraft in 5 months and now you're charging me another £25 - you're having a laugh."
So the guy tries telling me that this £25 was a special annual charge and since they've reviewed my account already they can't take back the charge. I never asked them to review it, I says! He continues with his bankers rhetoric so I'm like:
"Yeah, I know the drill mate - your bank's telling you to tell all their customers that it's procedure and that there's nothing you can do about it, it's because of that annual review you told us about - and in that way they authorise the theft of millions of pounds. How can it be fair that I paid you £25 not three months ago to review and increase my overdraft and now you're saying that you're charging me again because this time you've decided to review it - I didn't ask you to. In fact, when I took out my loan recently to end the vicious cycle of overdraft charges and crippling debt caused by your evil bank who wants me to get up to my neck in debt, at that time I specifically told you I don't want you to do an annual review and c u next tuesday!"
So he tries to give me some more such bullsh**t and I say I want to speak to the manager. He's like "I'll transfer you to the manager but I have to tell you something first... " "What?" I says, "that you're going to charge me £25 to speak to the manager"
The guy lets out a profound sigh like he can't believe that he's having such a bad day and how can people behave like I'm behaving, machine-gunning him with my voice as I was and taking everything he said to it's logical extreme. "No sir, certainly we will not charge you for that, please hold while I transfer you"
So he puts me on hold for what seems like a year, presumably either to give me the impression he was talking to his manager or to pray to one of his God's for an early death because man this job sucks! He comes back on the phone "I'm very sorry for the long delay" --- I'm thinking "yeah, yeah just give me my money" -- then he says "We have decided on this occasion, at the managers discretion" (he's says it like he's proclaiming some kind of royal dispensation! And why is it always "on this occasion", why not, 'yep, you caught us, we're thieving bandits and we're sorry) "at the managers discretion" he says "we will refund the £25." However, I'm to know that they will be reviewing my overdraft every year and, get this, they will charge me £25 on every annual review where it is found that I have gone over my overdraft limit on a number of occasions in the year to date, by royal decree! So not only are they charging me a million pounds every time I spend a penny over my overdraft limit, they'll also charge me £25 at the end of the year for doing it more than once. What a bunch of bankers!!!!
Anyway, I says I'm happy with that, just make sure you refund that as soon as.
Bob's your uncle, one for the masses.:T

Hi guys,
I’m thinking of trying to reclaim back my bank charges from HSBC as I’m trying to become a DFW! Is it worth starting to do anything now, or shall I wait until the court case is settled?
Also, I have a large overdraft with HSBC, will they remove this/close my account if I claim my charges?
Can I claim back from credit card companies as well? I have some small charges on an account which I closed down a few years ago. Will I be able to try to get these back?
Thanks for your help guys.

Hi Silky Racing.
My (large) overdraft didn't get cancelled when I claimed my charges back from HSBC.
They didn't cash the £10 DPA chq either - they returned it with my 6 years of bank stats!
The other questions I don't know the answers to but I am sure someone else will be along soon who can help.

I hope somebody may be able to offer me some advice?
My husband and I have two joint bank accounts with HSBC which we have always kept in the black. In April I had to leave my job due to illness which caused us to go over drawn on both accounts. We rang HSBC and informed them of the situation and requested an overdraft from them to stop us incurring charges as the £25 arrangement fee is less than the overdraft charges they are adding onto our accounts. We were told that they would not allow us to have an arranged overdraft as we didn't have enough points with them. However they are still allowing the accounts to go overdrawn and every month adding £150 in charges onto each of our accounts. We have tried arguing with them that if they will not allow us to have an arranged overdraft why are they allowing us to still go overdrawn but they just reply that this is the way they work. My husband is doing lot's of over time at work but we just can't seem to catch up when they are taking so much off us.
If anybody has any help or advice it would be a big help to us.Nothing to report:p0 -
hi
i would ask them to refund you on the grounds of hardship. its insane they wont let you have an agreed overdraft just so they can give you an unarranged one. they will have to deal with you under the new fsa waiver. they may not refund you but if you suggest a reasonable agreed overdaraft i would think they should consider this.
goos luck
