  • :hello: morning campers :hello:

It seems a bit cooler today...thank goodness, my poor long haired cat can't find anywhere to get cool and when he does he lays flat on his back with all his tum exposed to try and get a breeze through his fur.

Today is the day I pick up my auction purchases and turn the living room into a something looking like an eastern bazaar, there are 8 large banana boxes to sort through, great fun, particulary as I haven't seen all the contents of half of them. Summer is a slow time in the antique and auction world and the auctioneers had quite a lot of house clearance stuff for sale. These I love! :j you can get anything in a box from modern gifts that nobody really wanted to china that's a hundred years old, all just put away in a cupboard until the owner passes away. The relatives just put these unwanted bits and pieces in banana boxes and in most auction rooms these boxes get put under the tables whilst the good stuff is on trays on top. There is no way that you can sit on the floor and empty everything out to see what there is so you have to have a quick rummage at the top and if you see something you fancy you, ahem, hide it at the bottom of of the box, under something hidious and hope that you get the box.
Yesterday was the sale day, with summer not being a good time for auctioneers there wasn't a lot of money in the room so I managed to get 6 of these boxes for £1.00 each and I really don't have a clue about whats in the bottom of them, it's just like Christmas!
The auctioneers don't really sort these boxes out (they just assume that it's all detritus) and I found silver napkin rings etc at the bottom in the past. My very best junk box find was a 100 year old Royal Worcester moustache cup in one box and the saucer in the other, luckily I'd spotted these on the veiwing day and I just had to hope thst no-one else had seen that the 2 pieces were there, but separate, so I had to win both boxes, at almost any price. I got them both for around £10 each and sold the cup and saucer for £160. So I'm always looking for another of these glorious finds ;)

I'll report back if I'm lucky

I really would suggest to anyone to go and have a look at their local auction house, particularly at this time of year

    wow im impressed A-T.

If you happen to find any SUPER cheap vintage tiara's in your little boxes then i'd glady buy or trade one from you.

Every grown up princess needs a tiara... and i want one for my wedding but i want it to be *perfect* not a mass marketed one from Berketex brides
  • BLAST AND DAMMIT - we had roast chicken for dinner last night, the remainder being for chicken salad today... when I dished up the chicken was too hot to cover and put in the fridge so I had a bright idea...I'd put it out of the way of passing flies buy putting it in the microwave, brilliant idea, no fly will find it there I thought......I've just found the ***** chicken still there 12 hours later. The cats really will be pleased with their lunch

Ancasta -I'll keep a look-out for a tiara for you

Back when I was pretty ill I did a roast leg of lamb. Left it in the oven to cool...

    ..for a WEEK!!!

There was nothing left of it at all, not even the bone. Hundreds and hundreds of maggots though! I had to take the cooker apart to make sure I got them all. Sheesh.

Still, the oven finished up cleaner than it ever had been since the day it left the factory :)

Edit: Nowadays I set the kitchen timer to remind me if I've left anything to cool anywhere.

    Good morning all

An unexpected day off today - DD1 has sickness and the other end troubles so she's currently tucked up on the sofa watching telly.

Shall use the time wisely and try and get some cooking done for the freezer.

It's a lovely day here today - in between the waves of sea mist that drift in and out --- it was actually blowing in the back door earlier -- quite eerie....fog horn is going in the harbour too -- must be nasty out at sea.

Anyway - off to the kitchen to see if inspiration will strike.

    Have a good one all.

morning all, stuck at work again :)

HAd a great time at the piccies last night - Mr&Mrs Smith is a lot of fun (if you can ignore the slightly ludicrous premise) and War of the Worlds is predictibly big and loud.

I have a job interview today at one o'clock and am a wee bit nervous (and knackered as I didn't sleep very well last night) so any fingers you could cross for me would be greatly appreciated :)

Looking forward to tonight being slightly cooler so I can bake again, I'm freezing right now and can think of nothing nicer than cosying up to a warm oven that smells of cake!

Today I'll be handwashing our laundry. OH is in a "oh I forgot that you wanted me to ....." phase AGAIN. I asked him at the beginning of the month to get in touch with British Gas as our current account with them is in his name so they won't deal with me when setting up a DD as it will be to his bank account (privacy agreement) and I'm still waiting. Will have to buy another £5 for the electric, or I might just cave in and buy £10  I wouldn't mind but he has it marked as a high priority on PDA task list which he looks at daily :mad::mad: Anyway, what has this got to do with me handwashing? I asked him last night to order a washing machine from the Comet website as the money is coming from his bank account. Guess what he did :mad: I'm going up to my mums today as its my (not so) little brothers 13 birthday () so I'm going to take some of it up with me, but I'm going to have a go at handwashing it first though. This is the one time when I wish we had a downstairs bathroom like in the old house - I could put all the washing in the bath and trample it (like making wine from grapes) to wash it, rinse it under the shower and it would be less distance for me to carry the wet washing outside :rotfl::rotfl:As I currently have a sink full of grill pan soaking, I might even venture to doing the washing in a bucket in the yard. Big Brother contestants eat your heart out :rotfl::rotfl:I just wish I had a mangle (sp?)

I think anything else will have to go on a pending list all depending on how long it takes for me to get off my bum and get the washing done.

OH is at a staff BBQ/quiz tonight at work so he should, in theory, come home full and not need anything to eat. I've already requested a doggy bag as it's catered for 100 people but there should be only about 60 going ;) DD and I can have pasta which won't take long and will also be light on the purse & cupboards.

Off to clear the decks and try out some handwashing.

good luck with the hand washing!!

when me and my OH first moved out at 16, we were skint and the flat we lived in had to share washing machine and drier. it was a pound for one load, and as we were very skint we didnt have a pound coin to use!!

so, i opted to wash all socks and under wear by hand in the bath, it was hard work!! i had sore hands after for some reason, but it was an experience i wont forget, and hopefully (touch wood) wont have to do again!! lol!!

i think it was the wringing that hurt my hands so much.

    Morning

Well, made strawberry jam last night and Mr TM and DS1 tell me it's lovely. Did it on the hob as too much for the breadmaker. However, am trialling the said breadmaker as I type - a white loaf with some added wholewheat, However, I don't know if I've the right sort of yeast. The recipe book says 'use 1 sachet' but I only have the stuff in tins - so guessed and added 1.25 tsp. Will see how it turns out, but I'm expecting a few disasters. :)

Trying to source my curtain material. I've found a mill shop that is doing a 'buy 1m get 1m free' and they have what I want in - but it's a close run thing whether they have enough. I'm tempted to buy enough for the 2 big windows and buy elsewhere for the small window. They aren't on the same wall so any minor colour variations shouldn't be noticeable.

Off to DS2's swimming in a bit, then may go and 'fetch his fish back off their hols' :D We have lots of lovely aquarium shops around here so we can go and have a look round anyway.

Need to put another load of washing on. DS2 was given a set of Thunderbirds bedding by next door and as he has a space theme in his room, is desperate for it. (I find it's very money-saving living next door to an old friend who has 2 boys slightly older than mine. We get some lovely nearly new clothes and toys :D)

Oooh - just got a call from the mill shop - they have enough material, so I have just saved myself nearly £130. That's what I call a good deal on a Thursday morning :D
