When you sign up, you are asked which financial products interest you. At this stage you are not committing yourself to anything. According to the T & Cs, you only get the free offer if you tick 'trading stocks' here and nothing else.

You are then offered a choice of free share: you are given a list of six (I think) and can only choose one.

Most shares do pay dividends, and this is taxable income. However, the dividend on a holding worth just £100 would be tiny, and some companies (Apple, for instance) may not pay a dividend at all.

If you were to sell your share at a profit (that is, for more than the £100 it was worth when given to you) then your profit would be subject to CGT. Again, it is likely to be tiny and HMRC might regard it as too small to justify the bother of declaring it.

So they got back to me and confirmed that I do qualify and asked me to choose my free share.

You don't need to buy any shares to collect the free £100 share offer. Just deposit the £200 in their cash account and leave it there for 90 days. Make sure you apply through the MSE link to qualify for the £100 free share offer.

Thanks for your comments on my post.

I consider trustpilot to be a reasonable indication of the companies behaviour and in the case of etoro you will notice that 20% of comments gave a score of 1, the lowest possible. I have used trustpilot a lot and have never seen so many negative comments. This would suggest that something is amiss.

Or you can sell the free share and then buy a fraction of it giving yourself the chance to buy another fraction if its value goes down. I bought Nvidia, earned few quid, sold it and then bought a 15% of it at a lower value. As long as you don't withdraw till September you are not risking your money

I haven't read the eToro reviews on Trustpilot and I won't, for the reasons I have already given. I also won't report my positive experiences with eToro on Trustpilot as I don't consider them a good resource for making financial decisions.

You and others are obviously free to take guidance from Trustpilot or other review sources you like. I prefer the opinions of regular, frequent posters on the MSE Forum myself 😎

Last time it was possible, for most at least, to sell the free share and withdraw the entire lot. I wonder if they upgraded their IT or if this would still be possible.

The £200 in the GBP wallet don't seem to attract any interest for uninvested cash or am I mistaken? Got my Apple share instantly.

I’ve signed up for this via the link and have received the free stock, pretty promptly to be fair.

However I’m a bit concerned, having gone through all of the registration hoops and questionnaires about crypto and all sorts, sent them my money and invested in stocks (I’m happy to see how it goes for 3 months as something new) only now for them to say my account is restricted. They want a selfie video, which I’ve now done, but also a bank statement showing the deposit to them. It was two days ago…I obviously don’t have a monthly statement for that period in PDF. I’ve emailed them, but yet to hear anything. Apparently if they don’t receive it within 24 hours they could terminate my account? This is ridiculous. Starting to regret giving them any money. And because my account is restricted, I can’t withdraw anything…how convenient.

    Anybody else experienced similar?

I would send them a screenshot from my banking transactions and explain that a statement won't be available until xx/xx/2026.

  • On the back of the reference to etoro i attempted to open an account. To do so i had to deposit £200 which they acknowledged. The verification process which i appreciate is essential was tortuous with only bot AI assistance for customer services. After trying to complete the process countless times without success I closed my account. I still await the return of my £200 which as a pensioner is a cause of concern. I should have referred to the other comments above and wonder whether this platform should still feature in the newsletter. It is impossible to speak to a human being. I have phoned the apparently recorded message Complaints Department. Still no response and still no return of my deposit,
