I became a first-time Dudley BS customer last month (RS-1225, followed by the Loyalty RS this month), and the paperwork for both accounts did not include passbooks.

When I opened a RS account at local branch of Newcastle BS part of the conversation revealed that they had been busy opening passbook accounts for customers who had walked the 40 yards from the Nationwide, who were doing away with them. Some people like passbooks.

I believe Suffolk need the book if there is one, but now that branch/post and online accept the same £300, there will likely be less of them. I have a passbook version maturing 28.2.27 as it accepts £500, vs £250 for the online version of the same issue (which I didn't bother with.)

Yes, Suffolk branch-based RS accounts have passbooks which have to be presented in branch or posted to them for any withdrawals, including closure.

I read an article (that I think was serious) that suggested that there is increasing interest in passbook accounts as part of the fashion among under-35s for all things retro - so think vinyl/cassette LPs, wired headphones, printed magazines, fountain pens….

Lloyds, Halifax, Band of Scotland Regular Savers

I was on holiday when these were launched so catching up now, I had a Halifax credit card a good few years ago so I resurrected my online account but had no joy being able to apply for that RS.

I'm pondering doing a current account switch from Co-op ( my latest 'burner' current account) to BoS as it has a switching offer but don't want to jeopardise my Co-op RS …. hmm. Maybe I'll just wait til Co-op matures and hope that the Lloyds/BoS RS rates are an ongoing thing similar to First Direct.

I can understand the appeal of passbooks if you have a local branch, but otherwise they are out of date vs any online record for the same account and for us RS collectors, cost money to return unless a prepaid envelope is provided. I like the design on my Stafford Railway one (open ended RS) and will be sad to see it changed when the book is full and needs replacing.

I can understand Dudley, if indeed they are deliberately rather than accidentally not issuing them any longer, changing. These are one year accounts and in the case of the Loyalty version, not allowing withdrawals - so they will be active for a limited period and in most cases, only updated when the account is closed. If the account could be renewed via maturity options rather than having to close and post/email a new application, it might be different.

I had no open accounts at all with BoS, although I still had a login for their web site, and was surprised to be able to apply for the BoS 8% RS.

With Lloyds, I only had a credit card account, and similarly was allowed to open their 8% RS.

Seems that my existing Halifax accounts qualified me to open all three.

    Santander

Tried to open a current account to then access the new 8% RS. Failed, twice, after taking the selfie, dumping me back at the start of the process, with no comment. Could be my driving licence photo is of a somewhat younger me.

Then phoned to get an in person appointment, The system assumed you were an existing customer, so had to sit through all the options, before eventually getting through to a helpful CS person.

So far not impressed by Santander.
