Dynamic is definitely cheaper for me but not by much because

    1. The formula for my region East Midlands means Red rates are always more expensive on Agile.

    2. The standing charge for Agile is also more expensive.

    3. I don’t want the hassle of micromanaging my usage to benefit from times when Agile is cheaper.

Come April both Agile and Dynamic formulas are likely to change along with the Standing Charge.

Wholesale Rates are much more likely to go negative over summer which are only given as free on Dynamic.

Individual circumstances and usages determine which is best.

  • If you weren't already aware you can use this tool to see if your usage would be cheaper on Agile, Freephase or other tariffs.

Freephase Dynamic was nearly 10% cheaper than Agile for me. I've also found it a lot easier to manage as others have said. The 75p price cap also provides some additional security. Whilst this winter has been better overall I still get awful flashbacks from last winter when rates hit £1 kW/h a few times!

    I'm aware, thanks.

Although it only works well to a certain degree really.

Every night I run Immersion tank between 3-5am that uses 6kWh on Agile as these hours tend to be cheapest. So my Agile looks better than Free phase and better than Cosy.. but if I was on Cosy I would run it 5-7am or 4-6 on FreePhase and then.. these tarriffs would look like I'm better off.

    Hi all.

I'm on E7 with EDF having swapped to a smart meter exactly 12 months ago when they bribed with cash as my E7 radio controlled dual meter is due to stop switching later in 2026 when the R4 198kHz Long Wave gets decommissioned.

My cheap rate time on E7 is 00:30 - 07:30 GMT but 01:30 - 08:30 BST. I know because the info is in the Smart Meter user manual and also the pence/kWh rate is shown in real time on my IHD on one of the screen options.

I haven't been able to find online if the hour shift still applies to the EDF FreePhase Dynamic tariff Red Amber & Green time slots the same as my E7 tariff times.

To save me phoning CS, does anybody know this detail for certain ?

There is nothing I can see in either the tariff eligibility criteria and key features information or the Residential Terms & Conditions that makes any mention of GMT/BST, or of summer time / daylight saving time, or of the biannual clock change etc.

Therefore I think one must assume that the three different FreePhase Dynamic periods of Red (16:00 - 19:00), Amber (06:00 - 16:00 & 19:00 - 23:00) and Green (23:00 - 06:00) relate to whatever time the UK is observing, i.e. GMT or BST.

Thanks for that. I guess I'll find out for certain once I start looking at my daily usage charts in the EDF app assuming I decide to change tariffs.

Are you sure about the E7 times? When I had a dumb E7 meter it was switching between summer and winter times shifting by 1h + the randomness added - sometimes 0:31 sometimes 0:43am..

After moving to a smart meter it's always been 0:30-7:30 - although with Octopus - I assume that's a standard this day.

So once a year you get extra 1h longer night period and once a year you get shorter period.
