    Thanks for all the replies
Yes EDF are offering 3 options: SVR [I don't know whether my Off Peak meter will then charge SVR [July 1st] or switch off which would leave no heat or hot water both controlled by the meter], leave or get a smart meter
I was concerned when I heard about the RTS signal switch off but was assured [by EDF about a year ago] that my meters would not be affected by it.
I think the afternoon boost is essential [I actually have a really ancient Economy 11 which powers my underfloor heating [a great big storage heater substitute] and hot water.
Looking at various suppliers it looks as if Smart Meters can supply off peak but they seem to be saying Economy 6 or 7 or be suitable for charging cars at night type tariffs. None of them seem to have telephone responders who have a clue. EDF actually said we should know more by the end of June!

@distefano over the last year, how many kWh have you used on each of your various registers?
How much have they cost you?
With some figures, you should be able to have a decent estimate of what switching to a single-rate would cost and whether you could make effective use of Economy 7 or an alternative eg. OVO Smart Economy 9 or Snug Octopus.

This is my current set up, looks like were installed 2001, so presumably out of certification period?  Are these actually RTS meters? Not sure they are.  What questions should I be asking, meter wise, when the installer comes before he starts putting one in?  I want to make sure that the circuit heating the water/storage heat remain connected to the cheaper electricity periods only, whether that be E7 or hopefully E10 with EDF or another supplier.

What is the front of the meter enclosure made of - as that looks like metal with cut access.

    General forumites -

If it is also metal - would the gaps be big enough to allow a smart meter comms hub to communicate ?

    I wouldn't risk it:

I would, and I expect it'll be fine.
If you put your mobile phone inside a biscuit tin and call it, it will still ring.
I'd be more concerned about the unprotected metal edges where the cables pass through the enclosure. They need grommets.

Curiosity got the better of me. The PC I'm typing this on is connected to the internet via my mobile which is in the biscuit tin in the kitchen. All works fine - must go and recover mobile straight away before I forget where I put it. I wonder if my glasses are in there too?

But were your biscuit tins earthed - not that I can see obvious evidence that the above enclosure is ?

And from the dimensions / clearances - arguably in the south - the mobile signal based comms hubs are less impacted

If you put your mobile phone into your earthed microwave oven (with the oven switched off, of course !) it's still likely to ring.
