Hopefully the Custom opt-out will remain in place, though I very much doubt it. What I can't get my head around is the packaging expense. Say a small parcel under £100 value on SD is £2.94. The Seller doesn't get that money. Yet, the combined cost of a box, bubble wrap, packing tape and a drive to nearest drop-off point could be 65p. Does the Seller then have to build those expenses into the item price ?

There is no need to be paying inflated costs at a stationery shop to buy 4 postage bags at a time, or a sheet of bubble wrap for a couple of pounds. Go on ebay and look for larger amounts , I pay around 5p for a tamper proof packing bag.and my last bubble wrap was I think from here, using the coupon code to get it at £7.49 delivered. 500MM x 100M SMALL BUBBLE WRAP CUSHIONING QUALITY BUBBLE 100 METERS LONG ROLL | eBay  (Other sellers are available, I just happened to find this one with a code when I last bought) EDIT- Lots of codes avaialble on this seller, 500 x 100 roll can be bought for as little as £7.13.

Item  from seller A, £10 plus £2.94 SD (seller gets £10 buyer pays around £13.90)
item from seller B £10 plus £4 .50 p and P (seller gets £14.50 but has to pay for postage but buyer has to pay around £15.50).
So to be competitive seller B would need to drop their item price to around £8.40 so still only gets aroubnd the same as if they had used SD.
    Thanks for the reply soolin.
On the bubble wrap front, just make sure you check what you've received. I have purchased the 100m roll a few times from there, and both times I received c. 60-65m. Both times it was resolved by the seller, but maybe it's a numbers game, and without anything to compare to/checking, they get away with it more often than not.

On the SD front, I've built the BPF into my pricing, so the difference isn't that much. However, it's food for thought if and when SD becomes mandatory, for also building in packing costs too !!

Like everyone, having problems with Simple Delivery, can’t find a way round it, not found Advanced Options, yet.  However, a Warning to check yr listings. Listed 2 books, thought I’d just use SD even tho it stated on my listing that buyer would pay £3.09. This would cost me £3.25 but not too much to lose. On checking listings, one said Free Postage to buyer, the other buyer to pay £4.92 (on a £5 item). Deleted both and not sure where to go next! Obviously can’t use eBay as it won’t let me change anything, so pls be careful and check.

I think I posted on another thread, I found I’d listed something with Free postage to buyer (from SD).
I just revised the listing, went to the postage section and changed it to what I wanted so need to delete the listings.

Whenever I've selected simple delivery it's been a straightforward slider 'buyer pays' or 'you pay'  there's no mention of free postage.

Couple of things occur to me reading through this.
Recently I messed up on postage charged when I came to send, I just obviously sucked up the difference myself.  What if this had been Simple Delivery and the label produced was rejected by Evri say as overweight.  Sounds like it could be a nightmare.
I also haven’t seen anything to see how combined postage might work.  I’m sure combined postage rates have helped me sell multiple items many times.
Do you mean at the post office? If you purchase a label online you need to specify the right size and weight, simple delivery or not. With simple delivery there is an option to say the size and weight is wrong but I can't tell you what it does. If you were to buy a label and then realise the parcel was overweight I presume you can cancel the label and buy another? Presumably that is what eBay would do in the case of simple delivery but who pays the difference?
If you put insufficient postage on any item a surcharge will apply to it.

No I meant for myself, I didn’t check the weight properly when listing so when it came to sending it  cost me more than I charged, which is fine was my mistake.  But I was thinking if I’d entered too small a package on simple delivery and I just then used the label provided by EBay what would happen.

If you purchase postage through ebay you have to specify the package size and maximum weight. If you buy postage direct from royal mail, evri, or yodel you do the same. If you buy at the post office they will usually check the size and weight before you pay, but I'm guessing very few people do that these days.
The option is there on simple delivery to say the size and weight is wrong, I'd imagine ebay will then cancel the label and purchase another at your cost. You just need to read the message that comes with the label to check you didn't underestimate the size and weight when listing.

I don’t  how that would work. Buyer has paid eBay for a label , seller has received nothing, if seller can’t use the eBay label due to it being insufficient then seller could buy a new label , but eBay would consider the item un sent and cancel the sale. So my suggestion would be that seller would have to cancel the sale entirely.

I'd like to know where the name "simple delivery" came from. Reading this thread it looks like an oxymoron.

It’s simple if you are happy to use it, and eBay gets a lot of Vinted sellers who are used to it already and can’t quite get their heads round having to buy your own postage and work out how much to charge. It also releases fu ds which a lot of people find a simpler system that trying to work out what rules apply to each of their items to calculate when fu ds are likely to be paid.

All you have to do is add the weight, which many do already if using eBay labels,  and packed dimensions and eBay do all the rest. When items sells eBay send a label or a QR code and that’s it.
