I was wondering does anyone have a recipe to make tortillas? Is there a healthy way to make tortillas?

This link was posted a few months ago, and at the time I had a bash at the tortillas. My results were either "crisps" or nearly like proper tortillas but with burnt crunchy burst bubbles with the bits between the bubbles uncooked.

I couldn't get them to cook evenly whether on low, medium or high heat or somewhere in between. The recipe sounds so easy, so what was I doing wrong?

I have absolutely no idea. Would it be worth logging on to downsizer and asking the OP? They're a good bunch over there :)

I don't know why they didn't work unless you hadn't rolled them thinly enough to cook inside.

I used the downsizer recipe and had lovely results, and somewhere on here there is a fahita spice mix, which was equally fantastic apart from the after effects with the OH wind. PHeww:eek: _pale_

:o thanks Squeaky! And we're sometimes over here too (lots of things in common, it's just that OS is so busy I can't keep up over here as well as at Downsizer!).

Snowyowl, I'm sorry that the recipe isn't working for you. I think as foreverskint says the most likely culprit is the thickness. I get between six and eight tortillas from that recipe (enough for a couple of meals for two as they freeze well), which I roll out roughly to fit in a 24cm (I think - large, anyway) frying pan. Also I think the pan wants to be pretty hot, preheated - you cook the first side until it starts to colour and freckle, then flip it over, and it should start to puff up quickly, and separate in to two layers in places, and that's how you wind up with the larger patches of colour in some spots. But you really need to keep an eye on them as you're doing them because it's a short step between cooked and burned! If you have the heat too low they dry out before you get them cooked.

I'm not sure if this helps but if you can tell me any more about how you get on I'll do what I can, I use this recipe all the time and I really would love to see it work for you.

I love these from the shops and as they are so cheap to buy in Aldi I thought I would have a bash at making my own but when I attempted to eat them they fell apart on me, is there a special way of folding them so all the filling doesn't end up on the floor

And does anyone have any yummy suggestions for fillings?

  • I put the filing in the middle at the top only, then fold up the bottom and then fold the sides in on top, if that makes sense!
As for fillings, chicken with peppers and onions and some fajita seasoning, Chicken with sweet chilli sauce and coriander or any sort of chicken in a sauce. I've also been known to use them like normal sandwiches with tuna and sweetcorn inside or any 'normal' sandwich filling.
    HTH.
