First and foremost, I do not watch Live TV. I use my telly for gaming or streaming services only.

Except this one time where I used the telly for some background noise whilst I was tidying up. My HDMI cable is usually connected to something and my source output channel switches to something working when the signal was lost.

I didn't even realise but the chase was on lmao. I must have knocked my laptop and the HDMI so the telly came in instead and knock knock a TV licence man just happened to be there.  Coincidence eh?
Anyway he asked for someone else who no longer lived there as I just moved in on the 15th January.  I said 'no sorry that occupier doesn't live here"
And off he went. The blinds and curtains were open ans I am undoubtedly sure he saw the dark destroyer on the chase through the window...

I don't watch TV though lmao, like ever, this was just a one off but iv tried to pay it just incase they come back. So I've tried to pay for the TV licence 3 times It didn't go through and I have 3 of their payments stuck in my pending transactions. If they come back whilst this is getting sorted they can get stuffed.

What else should I do now though?

Why do I need to do that though I'm obviously not going to say that am I either,  like who the **** actually watches telly because I dont. 😆 it's not exactly unheard of to knock something whilst ya hoovering and a lot of telly's do that anyway.

Why do you have an aerial attached and channels tuned if you dont watch live TV? Especially as you just moved in so its not like you used to watch it there years ago and just forgot to unplug it after you stopped.

He's unlikely to know if it was The Chase live or The Chase on ITVX so I wouldn't worry too much if it was a one off. That's if he even looked through the window.

With regards to the payments, wait until they drop off as pending. If more than one transaction goes through then contact your bank and explain it's a duplication.

If you want me to bore you with the details then so be it.

We had a telly licence in our old flat my partner used to watch stuff on the telly whilst I was at work before we moved. When I'd finish work I'd come in and switch it off and plugged the HDMI into my laptop to play on my playstation.

But i bought a new house, cancelled my licence and moved out. After moving in iv explained to my partner that we don't actually need a TV licence if we don't watch Telly.

But like iv previously stated we've sometimes just put something on for some background noise whilst tyding not actually watching it. Why does it matter if you have an ariel plugged in or not doesn't it matter wether you actually watch it or not?

Iv convinced my partner to just watch stuff on netflix n that seeing as she doesn't actually watch or pay attention to anything thats on she just doesn't want to be sat in silence.

Then one day we done the tidying and just had stuff on YouTube playing on laptop until the hdmi was knocked it does happen I'm not saying a UFO has landed of something 🤦‍♂️ what's with the TV licence police on here today

If the ariel is not plugged in then you will not pick up live TV in the situation you stated when HDMI is knocked.
Sadly if it's showing live TV then you need a licence, watching or not.

Not a case of being TV licence police 🤷‍♀️

Except it was plugged in. I don't get your point ? Without me trying to sound nasty but what part of back ground noise do people not understand? I can still have a TV ariel plugged in with no TV licence and never switch it on can't I? So what difference does that make ? It was a one off...

Also the analogy with cars, that's not the same. Doesn't the TV licence say if you WATCH TV? It makes no difference really if the TV is on or off only matters if you literally watch it ? Or is that a misunderstanding on my part ? All TVs, tablets, laptops etc are all still capable of receiving the signal either way?

I will ask this then, yeah it was showing live TV at the time, but how long do I need a licence for ? If its a one off couldn't I surely just pay it for this month and cancel it and bin my TV ariel? It does say you can cancel any time on their website...

I doubt anything will come of your situation if he didn't ask you about it whilst he was there.

More generally (not policing) it's a good idea not to have an aerial lead attached to your TV if you don't have a Licence.    That way, no mistakes can be made that would put you on the wrong side of the law.

There isn't any concept of "just for background" in the TV Licence system.   You're either receiving TV broadcasts, or you aren't.

The requirement is to have a Licence to RECEIVE TV Broadcasts or use iPlayer.  (Yes, I know TV Licensing make it sound more complicated than that, but they have "issues").

Yes, you can cancel a TV Licence by full months, so you could do that.   You don't need to bin your aerial.  But it's a good idea not to connect it.

The TV Licence is somewhat complicated and there are a lot of common misconceptions about it.   Can I suggest this as a place to start reading?

Thank you for the reply I will certainly give this a thorough read.

As for the TV licence website I just went by their wording where it says "WATCH" I didn't see anything about wether you needed a licence to have it broadcasted because I just thought a lot of devices are capable of receiving signal. I just thought I am not receiving the benefit of viewing live TV or recording them etc then technically I wouldn't need one.

I'll put the aerial away and read this.. thanks again
