Thanks for this info. Have just applied online for caller ID, will make decision about whether or not I need to answer phone in future, was too tight to pay for it before!

This is correct, just the one call per quarter.

We are with TalkTalk, though the odd call we do place via BT, even if we didn't place any calls back with BT, to get caller display free I would be happy to make one call at the evening or weekend for 5.5p instead of paying £5.25.

Any idea what would happen if you did not make that one call through BT. Do you think they would kick you off caller display or charge you for a full quarter?

Just guessing but I'd say they would charge you because at least that way they are making money from you, otherwise if they kicked you off they dont gain anything at all.

After you have used your credit up with OneTel, you may wish to use BT to carry calls to mobiles via Dialwise, or some other cheaper dial-through operator like AbroadTel. Both BT & Telewest charge exactly the same for calls to 0844 numbers with the exception of possibly (not sure though) the minimal call fee is slightly less on OneTel. That's what I'm gonna do on ours when we use our £40 credit. That way at least I know we'll be making some (not that many as we rarely ring mobiles or 0845/0870 numbers) calls via BT to keep getting Caller Display for nothing instead of the £1.75 we were paying.

    Hope that makes sense?

NTL now charge £1.75 too, so it will be interesting to see how they react. Bet they keep it quiet.

thanks, s.c., and welcome to the boards.
this was the info I was looking for. I'm on an NTL line too.
If anyone hears any info on NTL cutting their charge, please post!

I have the 3 for £30 deal, and they've thrown in the calls (ex mobiles, etc) 24-7 for free for 3 months, and told me to ring the cancellation line then and say I'm thinking of leaving....it's in my diary!!

Can't get on with Dialwise. Obviously once all the OneTel credit is used up, I will route my evening and weekend 0870 and 0845 numbers back through BT. For the time being, I think I will make a note of my last call to BT and then make sure I make one or two "sacrificial" calls after 6pm. That way I am only losing out to the tune of 3.5p per call. Still a bargain to save £1.75 a month.:)

Just to clarify absolutely: It is definately 1 call per quarter, and not 1 call per billing period? (The reason I ask is that I am billed monthly with BT, therefore at least 1, maybe 2 of my bills will be just line rental).

Do you think BT will notice if you don’t make any calls through their network and hence charge you for Caller Display?

Although we use BT, I've just emailed OneTel (we use them for some of our calls) and Telewest and asked them if they have idea if they will also do free caller display as well now that BT is. It may be worth you emailing NTL as well. That way by the time your retention offer ends they may offer free caller display as well, or alternatively, use the fact that BT do free caller display so you are thinking of moving and they'll probably credit you the equivalent of the caller display cost until such time they (if they do that is) decide to do free caller display.
