If you do not wish to be called by these companies you must tell them so explicitly. If they continue to call, they are breaching regulation 21 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 and should be reported to the Information Commissioner who is responsible for enforcing this regulation.
I believe that the requirement for those registering with Privacy at Home to make some calls through the BT network is intended simply to enable BT to say that they are customers of this service. That is why BT does not worry about enforcing the requirement.

I have just removed Caller Display and opted for BT Privacy ( ) I make all calls with 18866 so will see what happens.
I abhor BT with a passion ! They are riddled with old-school institutionalism, and still sit smugly in their position of monolithic monopoly. If you think residential voice circuits are bad, thank your lucky stars you don't have to deal with their business data circuit orders ! (A bizarre anomoly that unlike most companies, BT's ordering process is shambolic and their fault fixing is supreme...
cheers to the engineers  , and a head banged firmly against a brick wall to the rest of them :wall: )
Vent complete !Like a priceless jewel buried in dark layers of soil and stone, earth radiates her brilliant beauty into the caverns of space and time.
Stately trees seem to brush the deep blue sky. Clouds billow to form magestic peaks. The songs of birds fill the air creating symphony upon symphony0 -

I'd suggest an evening or weekend 01 or 02 call of less than an hour - 5½p.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
If I start getting my line rental from someone else do I still get caller display?travelover0

No you won't, just one of the disadvantages of moving your line rental from Bt I'm afraid0

Yes you can still have it, but it want be free like it is with BT it will cost between approx 1.50p and 1.75p a month depending on your new supplier.Which will normally mean your monthly line rental goes up,you will also of course lose the other benefits associated with keeping your line rental with BT.0 -

Yes, but not for free.
You also run the risk of that the new line rental provider will block access to other carriers, such as 18866 and 1899, so you would end up paying more in the end, just by trying to save 50p at best. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Thanks everyone.
It seems I am better keeping my line rental with BT then???travelover0
