It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Just to bump this post up to the top again...........

I've just got my new BT bill and have phoned them to query what the £4.46 charge was. I was told it was for my caller display but was immediately offered it for free (and the advance payment will be refunded next quarter). They wouldn't refund me for the months previous though. :(

Just incase anyone else is as slow as me:

PHONE BT AND CANCEL YOUR CHARGE FOR CALLER DISPLAY!!!!!

Since this post I have happily been on free Caller Display from BT... but obviously have been a bit lax and today I received my bill and have been charged for the service for the first time. I hadn't made any calls last month... but there have been other months I hadn't made any calls too. Seems like they have cracked down.

From another website the rules now seem to be defined for free caller display i.e.

    "For business users
Available as part of calling features pack Caller Display costs from £5.25 (ex. VAT) per quarter.

    For home users
From 1st October 2006 customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display.

Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost, if the following calls are made. Customers who bill monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £1.75 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who bill every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £5.25 a quarter."

So - I now have to remember to make 2 calls per month via BT OR I need to move from BT for my line rental to one who offers CLI for free.

As I have had a greivance for many years about BT since they changed the rules on disconnection charges from £0 to £50 mid contract I am happy to leave them altogether. Has anyone any suggestions of alternatives?

EDIT : I have been having a look through this Forum and think I have answered my own question i.e. keep with BT and make sure I make 2 calls with them per month!

Yes, I hope that would be the conclusion of most having had a bit of a delve into the threads on here.

It may just be an indictment of my eating habits but I get round the '6 calls per quarter' requirement very easily by having the number of my favourite Indian takeaway programmed into my phone with a 1280 prefix. That way, I know I'm certain to make between 6 and 12 calls in a quarter even if, using saynoto0870.com, I've been able to avoid calling any 0845 or 087 numbers!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Just to make my post a bit clearer... the disconnection charge from BT I was talking about was from the ISDN service... not the normal phone line. I had to have ISDN for work as ADSL was not available. When I took out the contract they told me as long as I had the service for 12 months there was no disconnection fee. After 18 months ADSL became available and I decided to cancel the ISDN in my mum's house and have ADSL in my new house instead. £50 please BT said "we've changed the disconnection charge in the meanitme". I argued and pointed out that if they insisted on the charge having told me it would be free I would never use their services again (I was with BT ISP at the time). My mum keeps getting calls from BT asking why she is not using them for calls any more... and I've got several more people off BT since for calls. It has cost them a lot more than £50 in the long run. I'll let them get away with charging me for the caller id for one month but I won't slip up again! Rant over.

PS. Always try saynotto0870 too but sometimes alternatives are not in there. I resort to email in those cases or go via 18185 if I'm desperate!
  • Well, I had made the required number of calls (prefix 1280) and they have just charged me for Caller Display. I'm not impressed!

Unfortunately, 18185 are not always cheapest for 0870 or 0845 calls these days - BT beat them most of the time!

  • Always thought this was quite genius of BT thinking this up...

Market it as privacy, stopping you from receiving sales calls..

the real reason they bring it out.. to stop other companies being able to cold call you and taking your calls away from BT.

Not solely BT, lots of the major line rental and call package suppliers recommend that you register for TPS to suppress you moving supplier.
