    Hi,

I have been using caller display for several years and am delighted it is now free. I recommended it to one of my neighbours, who duly singed up. Unfortunately, it is playing havock with his BT Synergey DECT answerphone as it now keeps an automatic log of all numbers calling and flashes the "you've got messages" light ... even though there are no messages, just someone has called and it has logged the number.

When he uses the 'phone, it forces him to view all called numbers before he can delete them. He would be OK if he could just delete them without looking, or preferably just swith off the call history. I looked through his manual to see if I could switch off the called numbers log, but it is not possible with his BT branded 'phone.

In his case, caller display is causing him to press many more buttons. I explained that it is his 'phone, not Caller Display that is causing the problem, but I don't see him buying a new set for the sake of it. For most users (including myself) this free feature is a welcome benefit.

Can someone tell me the BT number to call to get him removed from the free Caller Display? :(

    Thanks for your help.

    Johnnie

150 from his handset. Choose Opt 4,then Opt 4 again, then Opt 9 which should give him a live customer service person who should be able to cancel the facility.

Give it a day or so and if it still isn't working give them a call.

Just one point, I assume your phone is compatable?

can i also add that the caller display function that is offered free is (according to t&c) only from calls on the bt network. so no mobiles or telewest callers numbers will display. I hope i am wrong because i am still paying for mine for that reason so i anyone can enlighten me please do!

You are right that BT say that numbers will not be displayed if the call is from "... some switchboards, non-BT networks or where the caller's number is withheld."

However, I can confirm that I received a mobile call today which displayed the number okay. The call was from a phone on the T-Mobile network, and I signed up to BT Privacy at Home last Friday, having previously subscribed to BT Caller Display (since it started, as it happens).

I think the "some" in the T&C above is meant to apply to "non-BT networks" as well as to "switchboards" [as written], as I don't think that there's any difference the numbers which will be displayed with Privacy at Home as compared to Caller Display.

Hope this helps to clarify things.

  • Has anyone wondered why BT would want you to sign up for the TPS?

Doesn't that mean fewer calls by their telemarketing customers?

Yes - but is also means fewer customers being lured away by their CPS competitors.

    Thanks again to the OP.

I just had my frst bills (dated 11 July) from BT since cancelling my paid for Caller Display service and switching to the free one on the afternoon of 1/7/05.

I have two lines. In both cases, I have been charged only 4p + VAT for Caller Display.

This is how it was shown on each of my bills under the heading "Service Charges":

    Network services £0.04

Date Description Quantity Monthly charge (£) Cost (£)
    01 Jul BT Calling Features Pack 1 1 1.48 0.04

[sorry - I don't know how to make the columns line up in this post]

One interesting point: I haven't made a single call via BT yet.

I had forgotten about services being charged in advance and had intended to start making my minimum 1 call per month via BT AFTER this month's bills, thinking (incorrectly) that it would only save me 10 days worth of Caller Display Fees.

Perhaps I have been charged 4p for Caller Display because I haven't made a call via BT!! It's very strange. I initially thought it was a proportion of the monthly fee for my old paid-for Caller Display but that doesn't really make sense since it is an advance charge.

Anyway, Caller Display for 4p+VAT for a month sounds pretty good to me!

Perhaps the 4p is is the part of the quarter ( a day or two ) up to the day you cancelled?

Yes, a bit more than 4p is (excluding 17.5% VAT) approximately the charge for 1 day of the former £1.75/month fee.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

It doesn't really make sense, since the bill is for 12 June to 11 July. For the 4p to be the charge for 1 day would mean network servces are chargeable not in arrears, not in advance, but for the calendar month during which the bill is issued. I didn't think BT worked that way.

Anyway, I'm not bothered. 4p exc. is effectively free (and is a lot cheaper than £1.75 inc).
