No. No one has yet answered this one. I suppose the easiest thing to do is set my Orchid dialler up with the 1280 override call weekday evenings only. I rarely make evening calls but a call through BT will only be 5.5p per call as opposed to 2p through 18866. Supposing I make say 10 calls a month that way that will only equate to 55p and the calls through 18866 would still have been 20p, meaning I will only lose out to the tune of 35p. 35p to save £1.75 is still a good deal in my opinion.:D

Or set the Orchid dialler to dial home once a month, via BT

BT told me this afternoon that one call a month will do. The people they are after are the Talk Talk and Onetel people who he said were not contributing to BT callwise.

I would have thought the dialler would be at home so if you got it to phone home it would be dialling the same number which would be engaged therefore not generating a chargeable call.

"Phone home" in this case is phoning back to Orchid - so unless you're living at Orchid's offices, you'll be ok ;)

If some of your callers are using 18866 though, you'll still occasionally have a problem trying to decide.

I answered a call from 004417xxxxx yesterday (knowing who it was from the international version of the number) but, today, that same person has called twice and the CLI has shown as 'UNAVAIL' on both occasions.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

If you are a CPS user (TalkTalk, OneTel, Tele2 etc) to route calls back to BT you need to use the prefix 1280.

You dont. I just registered through the 0800 no. from a TalkTalk CPS line with no 1280 prefix and it was live as soon as I put the phone down !!

Of course you don't need to dial 1280 to route the 0800 call to register for caller display, that wasn't what the answer was for.

You NEED to make some calls via BT to qualify for free caller display, to route your calls back to BT you MUST dial 1280.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

In Contact tariff is just incoming calls isn't it? I therefore doubt this would work as the condition of free caller display is based on you making "some calls".

Has anybody asked BT to clarify what they mean by "some calls?"

Yes, I have - one call is enough.

BT were initially rather evasive when I asked for clarification of "some calls". So I asked what would happen if I made just one call with BT after joining BT Privacy At Home. How long would it be before I was charged for the service?

The response was that it was free and that I would never be charged.

In practice, I make plenty of 0844 calls via BT (I checked that this non-geogaphic code would count, and was told that it would), so I won't be able to confirm it from personal experience.

Now I'm kicking myself that I didn't ask for confirmation that Caller Display wouldn't be withdrawn after a period of making no further calls via BT. Maybe that's the catch...
